S52 Failed smog after storage - too rich

After my S52/OBD1 sat for a few months, I took it into get smogged & it failed due to too much unburned fuel and high CO. The exhaust smelled like gas, so the fail was not surprising.

Is there anything easy to try first? I don't have an OBD1 reader, can get one if that's the best way to work on this.

    Engine runs fine, BTW.

    Thanks!

Did you run it for a while on the freeway a few times before taking it in? Warm it up fully and burn off all the crap thats sitting in your cats a couple times.

Good idea. That will also get rid of the stale gas in the tank, don't know if fresh gas will help much or not. Anyway, it's worth a try for cheap & easy. I taped a "GOING TO SMOG 12/14/09" sign next to my expired plates, hopefully that and my "failed" results printout will show good faith if I get pulled over.

I would pull the sign off. Kind of an invitation for a ticket. You can still register without smog and get temp tags.

In Nevada, it's kind of weird. They don't care if you speed (within reason) but they're totally anal about expired plates.

Anyway, I have the day off on Friday, so I'll drive off all the stale gas, refill with fresh, and smog it warm. Thanks to all for the tips.

You could try using ethanol if your really hard up.

Smog it with 2 bottles of dry gas (gas line anti-freeze) in the gas tank if you have maybe 1/4 tank of gas.
