    M52B25 compared to m50b25/tu

Right now I am looking for a M50 Tu, or not. I came across a great deal on a whole car which is a 1998 323is, 5 speed with 67k. I could probally get that for around $700.00 plus what ever an e34 oil pan costs, and an OBD I conversion, or convert the e30 to OBD II. Most of the M50's I have been finding are
    1. $500.00 the cheapest motor, avg around $600.00 (from e34)
    2. $100.00 ECU
    3. $150.00 flywheel
    4. $200.00 for accesories
    5. $50.00 MAF
    6. Who knows little tid bits here and there.
That is going to cost me a little over $1000.00, with a motor having 100K plus miles. I have already spent $150.00 on the A/C comp, P/S pump and alt, but those could be sold.

Also If I go with the M52B25 I get the e36 5 speed, so that would compare with the M50 with the G260 (which I could sell).

The M50 does make more power stock, but with the M52B25, am I able to add S52 cams, m50 mani, and most of the other bolt ons that 2.8 owners usually run?

Sorry for the long post, any opinions towards the matter would help.

The M52B25 is pretty weak; 170hp. Basically an M20 power-wise with the extra weight of the 24V. You can do S50 cams in an M50TU, and doing an OBDI conversion really just isn't worth it for an M52B25. If you want 2.5 liters of fury, just get an M50 to begin with.

Having just completed an M50NV swap I noticed a good bump from the M20B25, the NV is already a high-end motor which you can't say as much about the M50TU out of the box (but after S50 cams all bets are off). The TU is in all likelihood the faster motor overall with more area under the curve, but it may not be as fun to wind out when it's bone stock.

Also, it will cost you more than $1k. When it comes to automotive stuff, especially engine swaps, the only purpose a budget serves is something to be crushed into oblivion. In addition, it seems you have not yet considered a brake booster/MC, exhaust work, tranny brace, air filter (stock won't fit) etc etc.

Thank you, I thought it was a crappy motor, just needed the opinion. I wish it was a 2.8.

Maybe I should of mentioned in the begining, I already have e28 motor mounts, I am modifying the tranny brace as we speak, I have a 325ix brake booster, and all of the small things, the exhaust work I will do myself once I get closer to the motor install. All I need is the motor, and the direct accesories to the motor, so I was comparing in regards to the motor itself and not the other variables.

How do you like the NV?

I fucking love the NV. But then again, I'm not really used to driving a light car with any sort of power to it. ;)

What about seeking a parts car? I picked up 2 e34 parts cars for $900, you only need one, I had other...issues!

This place is like catholic school, 2/3 of the students smoke weed on a daily basis, but the faculty seems to convince the outside world that drugs are just in the other schools, the resident pot dealer thinks he's cool because he has the originality to call anyone he doesn't like a homosexual, and most of the little children follow him like sheep, then there's the few with brains, you hardly ever hear from them, perhaps don't even know they exist, but they get all the sh!t done.

This is so true! Ha, I remember thinking that my S52 swap was going to cost around $5k when I did it. Before I was 100% done I totalled it up and I was just under $8k. The little things will get you. The kicker is that my OBD-1 conversion and oil pan were free, just swapped the OBD-2 stuff out with an OBD-1 motor at the shop. After replacing all of the seals and wear items it adds up.

I learned my lesson about that though and I'm not even going to budget my next swap on paper.

You set a pretty lofty goal.
After spending $7k over 3 years on a DIY S14 rebuild, I decided to save that engine and do a 24v swap and use the six during track season and then go back to the s14 or park the car off season.
                  I got a 99M3 drive train for $2.7k :)
I thought "why didn't I just go this route in the first place?" "It's going to be a cheap no brainer."
Since it was going to be a track build, I figured the budget would be around $4k
My swap is done but still needs an AUx fan and an Oil cooler kit to be track worthy.
Rough addition has the 24v project at a little north of $8k  :p

If you are not in a hurry, shop around carefully. Having another car helps.
