can I put a non-vanos head on a vanos engine?

I'm looking at getting a 98 528i engine for cheap to put in my e30 318is, but don't want the added complexity of a vanos head - would a non-vanos head from a 92 m50 be direct fitment to a latter block, or no? If not, what would I need - also, would an auto's harness be identical to the manual? Looking to get everything I need from one parts car, and then the tranny back to the rear either new or from a junkyard.

I apologize for my naivety, but could you explain? If I went with the m50 non-vanos head, couldn't I run OBD1 - or do I not understand this correctly :o

Yes you can, had a setup like that before in a E36. Not terribly difficult but you should just geta vanos head

you used the M50 non-vanos on a later block? What did you have to do to get it running?

I'm curious about why everybody is recommending the vanos head, I'd already have one with a 98 528i engine but plan on boosting later on - and from what I've read the non-vanos head would obviously not have any vanos-ticking issues as well as stand up to more abuse - am I wrong, here?

Is there megasquirt or similiar engine management for both fuel and spark for the vanos heads? Also, if the engine currently has vanos tick - would you still stay with that recommendation?

BTW, I like your rear wing - is that a painted IS spoiler?

Appreciate the info, guys - learning a lot, here :)

you can get a vanos delete kit, and that should solve the vanos issue for you.

not too sure on the engine management part, but vanos tick wont be a hard fix. if you want to go turbo, a non vanos head would be the way to go.

                  its a mtech 1

so as I understand it, M50 non-vanos with OBD1... any place like painless performance for bmw engines?

yes NV M50 head on a S52 bottom, OBD1 harness and sensors. I think it was the harmonic crank balancer that need to be changed out in order to recieve a crank signal. Chris Langsten bought the car from me after I couldnt get it started and he trouble shooted it to this if I recall.

Sadly, there is no Painless Performance for BMW engines. I wish. LOL.

Actually, that quote was in reference to someone else's car! :D I just found the quote to be really funny.

Wiring a non-Vanos engine or a Vanos engine isn't that difficult with the factory wiring harness. Terminating the factory harness from the donor car with the proper connections for the E30 is slightly more difficult, but it is nothing you can't do after tracing a few items in a BMW Electrical Troubleshooting Manual.

You can get these manuals at http://www.wedophones.com/BMWManualsLead.htm
