I'm sure this has been asked and answered before, but I'm not finding anything but guesswork from the people who like to provide guesses to answer questions on forum threads.
Can a non-vanos head be successfully mated to a larger displacement vanos block without any mechanical issues? Engine management would be by megasquirt in some form. Note that I'm fully aware of how great vanos is, so a sermon on that topic would be strictly optional in this thread.
