    OBD2 Mastas! Name this connector!

Hello! So the harness is out of a 97 Z3 2.8 non-tu 5 speed. I am converting an S50 to run OBD2. I am pretty new to the OBD2 management but for the most part it has been fine except for a few things.

I have two connectors that are spliced off of the Red / White Wire coming from the Crank Position Sensor. One is a male 2-pin, and the other is female. I have NO clue where they go to.

I have been through the engine management wiring diagrams and I have not seem them yet. I have a 98 E36 328 Harness that had the same harness attached.

    *AFTERTHOUGHT*
Through doing some tracing I have located the vanos plug to go to the injector rail. Since this stuff is looping around does one plug into the rail and one goes to the vanos?

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Past Car : E30 S50 6 Speed 5 Lug 3.73
Current : Z3 S50 OBD2 (Smog Legal) 6 Speed BBS RN Dual Ear Diff

I believe those go to the coil pack harness on OBD2

Yeah, this harness was part of a recall campaign, and that's why it's not on any wiring diagrams. Can you read off what the PN is?

Argh, I messed with this exact harness on a 97 328is a half year ago, but I've forgotten where everything goes now!

        What was the recall about?

The recall was a voluntary one, to address an M52 crank position sensor that frequently went bad. All M52 and S52 were involved in this campaign.

In its place, an M52TU crank position sensor was installed. To adapt it to the M52, however, the cable 12514592703 was required, as the OP has pictured.

According to SI 12 10 99, (1) goes to the VANOS solenoid, and (3) goes to the wiring harness where the VANOS solenoid used to plug in.

I am not sure how you plan on converting an S50 to run on OBD-2 without some electrical tomfoolery. I believe hoveringuy has posted precisely what the difference in signals for the crank position sensor is. One uses a front mounted CKPS (the S50), and the M/S52 use a rear, block mounted CKPS that reads a crank-mounted tone wheel.

Well the real difference between the two is not really much. If you count both wheels on OBD1 and OBD2. Both are 60-2 wheels. Granted one way smaller than the other.

OBD 1 uses a VR Sensor (Analog Based)
OBD 2 uses a Hall sensor (Square Waves!)

Air gap is really the most important and hoverin guy has shown us that a VR sensor DOES work on an OBD2 Crank wheel in the block :)

              Oh yeah! And Thanks!

I was starting to get to that conclusion thinking about why this adapter harness was there and why it was giving 12V to the CPS and not +5V

Ahh ok, cool. I guess all you need to do then is to make a nice cable to run to the front of the block. I did not know both were 60-2. :D

In theory it seems fine. :) Hoveringuy and matt have had lots of good info.
