Silver Label 413 DME with Red Label Chip???

    The Main Question:
Can I use the chip out of a Red Label 413 DME in my Silver Label DME to bypass EWSII and the speed sendor issue?

    The Back Story:

I recently did and s52 swap with a motor out of a 99 M3 which has the Seimens MS41.1 DME, which is not chippable.

So for me there was no way to bypass the EWS. I received the motor, harness, DME, and all EWS related accessories. My plan was to intall the motor with the EWS and just have it tucked away under the dash permanantly.

I wired everything up, go to start it up and apparently something was done wrong since the ECU fried.

So now I decided to do an OBD1 swap on the motor. I have an OBD1 harness that is modified to fit the S52 and a silver label DME without a chip on its way over to me.

I just was wordering if I could use the chip out of a red label 413 s50 in the silver label 413 s52 as a base tune to get the motor started and bypass the EWS system and the speed sensor issue I hear of.

I know the tune on the chip will not be right due to the different injector sizes and displacement, but that would be all addresed when the car gets a dyno tune.

So essentially all I am asking is are the Red and Silver Label DMEs the same except for the software on the chip?

I'm pretty sure it goes the opposite way. I think you can use a silver label chip (with ews delete) in a red label but you cannot use a red label chip (which doesn't have the ews delete feature) in a silver label DME. The chip has to have the ews programmed out I believe. But I am not an expert I'm sure someone else will be able to tell you for sure.

There are plenty of ways to bypass the EWS on MS41.1 (send it to me) and get a nice tune on the MS41.1 (send it to me). I also sell chips for the 413 and 506 ECUs that will get you great, smooth power without the expense of dyno tuning.

        /slick sales pitch

As for what you're trying to do, it would probably run, but I wouldn't do it. You'd be injecting ~20% too much fuel.

As a GENERAL rule of thumb, red label ECU's came with non-EWS chips and silver label ECUs came with EWS chips. They are interchangeable. (Although I have never tried putting an EWS chip into a red label ECU and running it in an EWS chassis.)

i knew for sure the fueling map would be off, my main concern was if the software on the chips was completely different.... i just want a base tune to start it and put it on the dyno and start pulling fuel...

hopefully the ecu and harness come in tomorrow. they are both out of a 95 m3, but the ecu is sliver label, were there silver label ob1 ecus?

i am so close to getting this thing going, its killin me, and friday is the deadline since saturday im having some wisdom teeth pulled....

out of curiousity i did try this before-put a red label 413 stock chip into a silver 413 ecu w/ ews and it did start the car.
just like with the OP,i did this to move the car while waiting for my proper chip/tune to arrive from TRM(Matt) couple years ago....
i did an e30 m3/s52 obd1 conversion running a red label ecu w/ the TRM tune and to this day has always worked great :)
hope this helps and gl on your swap...
