    i have a m20 trans on my M50 and its junk.. i did not do the swap so ya but you are better of finding a trans from a E36 or E34... also when you use the m20/m42 motor's only 4 out of the like 7 or 8 bolts will be holding the trans in.

    E30 Turbo 2.8L - 60ft - 1.70 :: 1/8th - 6.99 :: MPH - 105.47 :: 1/4 - 10.66 :: MPH - 132.53
    *RIP* E36 M3 - 60ft - 1.944 :: 1/8th - 8.64 :: MPH - 80.00 :: 1/4 - 13.55 :: MPH - 99.95

      Yeah, the 4 biggest bolts (M12 as opposed to M8 ). It works fine.

      The E36 transmission does have closer gearing, but it also requires a numerically lower diff. It's also newer and the ZF320 will probably be stronger. For around town with an M50, I've found the G260 with a 3.73 to be pretty nice. First and second are nice and short, although you're turning over 3300 RPM at 80. Of course, you'll be hard pressed to find one in good condition whereas sorted ZF320s are probably more readily available.
      paint sucks

        The Getrag 240 is from an M42 not an M20 and I have no problems with the transmission.

        I would still love if someone who has tried to use the M50 flywheel with the Getrag 240 would chime in here. I guess at the worst I pull everything out make sure it all bolts up and goes back together, and then try to get the starter to turn over the engine while it's still out.

            Be carefull with that statement. That only applies in the US. (yes i am aware you are in the US lol but some of us arent ie me). The G240 was used on euro 320i's as well. this is WHY the M20 starter and flywheel are compatable with it. the g240 NEVER came on the back of an M5x, and is why it does not work. you will probably find noone will chime in because noone has done it.

            Honestly.. just get a (ground down) M20 flywheel, starter, clutch kit and be done. $250 max

              well I now have the motor all bolted in and started it up for the first time today. She runs perfectly, and the M50 dual mass flywheel/PP/clutch are all in and it all works perfectly with the M50 starter (which coincidentally is exactly the same as the M42 starter). So I can now 100% verify that this combination works. I do think the swap FAQ thread should be changed to state that the M20 flywheel/starter with the G240 is an optional upgrade, but not needed.
