    Questions regarding M52B28 and M52TUB28

Hey guys, looking for a little help here. I have read all of Wikipedias 2.8l engine write ups and searched this forum, but cannot find an answer that I am happy with.

The TU - is this only a dual vanos motor? I know it comes in the late model e39 528i, late model Z3 2.8l and in the e46 2.8i. I believe these were offered in both vanos configurations, but I can't find any answers that back this line of thinking up. Any ideas?!

I am looking to buy an aluminum block single vanos 2.8l for a race car project to help keep the weight down over the front axle. Does anyone have an actual number for the weight comparisons between the M52B28 and the M52TUB28?

    Thanks for the help,

M52TU could be an annoying swap to do, especially if you have little patience for wiring. With OBD2 conversions, turning a wrench is less than half of whats involved in the conversion. You also have no option of converting to OBD1 to make life easier either.

M52 is more common swap, and the conversion usually includes converting to OBD1 using the wiring from an M50TU, though it can be done without converting to OBD1 (like i am doing/have done).

Having virtually completed an OBD2 swap, i would not recommend a first timer do it. I have had a lot of trouble, but luckily a large amount of patience. having said that, if you want to have more of a challenge over an "ordinary" M5x conversion (and the bragging rights that go allong with it), then go nuts, and go for the M52TU. Otherwise stick to an M50TU or an OBD1 converted M52
