Lower numerically means a higher gear ratio

You are right though, and runing taller gears is perfect for a turbo application, so you can actually use first gear.

yeah, leave it to me to get mixed up with a project that is screwed up from the start!!

i'm leaning heavily towards the g240 at this point!

A stock m50 is very underpowered. If your overall goal is to keep the motor stock to have a nice smooth running reliable motor then go with the g240 for ease of installation. I personally would prefer a stock m50 to my stock m20 (even with perfect valve adjustment m20's sound like a sewing machine, and a timing BELT!!! on an interference motor is SO fucking stupid) even though m50's really dont have a noticeable diference in power over an m20. If your going to turbocharge it, or make power some other way go with the g260 (or like ethrty suggested go with a zf)

I just finished dropping my M50 into my 91 318is on Monday, and after looking at both the M42 and M50 starter, they are identical as far as I can see, same part#'s on the body and all. This is due to the fact that the M42 and M50 dual mass flywheel have the exact same gear ring size with the same tooth spacing.

Yeah I used the G240, but I don't have mine running yet, just finishing it up this weekend hopefully.

Just to get another idea of what you did, as compared to what other people have done, can you tell me which driveshaft, clutch setup, starter and shifter carrier/rod parts you used ?

I used the M50 starter with the M50 dual mass FW and clutch. I will be using an E36 driveshaft and cutting down the carrier/rod for the shifter.
