I thought the engine was ground through the mounts - it could very well be something that obvious. Where is the ground supposed to go?

It can't ground through the rubber mounts. There is supposed to be a ground strap going from the aluminum motor mount arm and the side of the frame rail.

that is your problem dude... all current is flowing through that 18 gauge wire and that's why it's fried. Earth cable should be from the block to the frame. Need to replace all burnt wire and install earth cable. GL

Alright, well I'm glad someone pointed out the motor ground (seems obvious) - however I DID check for continuity from the engine to the frame before I fried it, guess it just wasnt enough though. I made a solid ground cable and fixed the harness - she cranks over again. However, the MAF is getting hot as shit with the new wire in place - like the issue was not actually fixed, just bandaged. Could the MAF be bad? Any other ideas?

Hmm interesting, on my old eta the main ground was off and the starter and all accessories were grounding through the fuel injector ground from the valve cover to the firewall, it worked for god knows how long like that until I noticed.

                  harness - fixed.
                  motor - grounded.
                  spark - yep.
fuel - replaced the filter and I stopped cranking it over before it reached the rail because the MAF was getting so damn hot; so I really don't know

unplug the MAf and see if it will fire, odds are you fried the MAF with your lack of grounding previous.
