    WTF electrical issues

Ok, so my m52 swap was running perfectly. Started every single time, and the coolant system works perfectly.

I unplugged the ECU because it started giving some funky codes, and when I plugged it back in, the starter wouldn't crank at all. Thought the battery suddenly died, but I tried to jumpstart it and it still didn't do anything. Kerrath and I push started my car, drove around the block a couple times, came back, and it started just fine. No more codes.

It was good for a couple days, but then another strange issue started. The coolant gauge would read high while the engine was running. It would look like I was going to overheat, but when I pulled over and shut off the engine, and turn the key on, it would read dead nuts at thermostat temp (75 degrees). My efan switch is at 80 degrees, and it wasn't on, so I decided to let me car idle into the "red". As soon as it touched the red, the fan turned on. So red was actually ~80 degrees. Turned off the car, turned the key on, and it was half, which is normal. I assumed it was the gauge coolant temp sensor, but being a thermistor, I can't imagine running vs. not running would have any effect on it's signal. Something else must be wrong.

So I've been nervously driving around for a couple days, pulling over a few miles to make sure I'm not actually overheating. Guess what problem came back? The starter won't really work anymore. Sometimes if I held the key on the "start" position, it would click a couple times and finally catch and start up just fine. The starter is pretty much unresponsive now.

So I'm thinking maybe there is a weird ground issue, or maybe the starter is just (going) bad, but that doesn't explain the coolant gauge. I dunno WTF's going on. Any ideas?

Check your ground under the ecu ( i think there is one there, not sure), but swap out your ecu relay sounds like it may have gotten power surged. Was the battery connected when you went to plug the ecu back in?

I'd start by disconnecting the battery and letting the dme reset itsefl.

if that doesn't help, swap out the ecu relay

Yes, the battery was plugged in. Is the ECU relay the "main relay"?

I'll try it, but the ECU seems to be functioning perfectly. Not sure it could even cause starter/coolant gauge problems... It's worth a shot though! Thanks for your suggestions.

ecu relay and main relay, i believe, are the same. I think your relay or ecu may have gotten a little power surge, as i mentioned before. Because with the battery plugged and ecu unplugged there's still 12 volts buzzing around in the relay, fuse etc.

Try what i suggested and see how she does

I'll try it... But I still don't think that will effect the starter or coolant gauge signal... Those don't go to the ECU

I'm about to replace my starter... Any idea's about the coolant temp gauge? I suppose I could retap another sensor and see if it fixes anything

I'd probably run an aftermarket gauge, that's what i plan on doing with mine, i don't trust bmw gauges, when they start bouncing around like a damn trampoline.

I replaced the starter today with a known working starter from my "parts car". Same problem. The solenoid seems to click randomly, but doesn't catch. WTF?

Also replaced all of the fuses/relays etc

Figured it out. Ground cable from engine to chassis was corroded under the insulation. Very strange. New ground cable and all is well.
