    Car hard to shift.

My car is hard to shift. Whether the car is running or not. No matter what gear 1st through 5th. It's through out the whole motion. It almost feels as if the selector rod is rubbing really hard on something. But it's not. And the shifter lever seems to get hot.

I put new fluid in when I swapped it. And it seemed to go threw the gears fine before I was completely done with the swap.

I had a similar issue with a ZF.

My first BMW was a 95 M3. This was back in 1998 so the car was only 3 yrs old. It happened as I was up shifting from 2nd to 3rd. It notched into 3rd on that shift and for the next few days it was difficult shifting to and from any gear.

The car was under warranty so I brought it back to BMW and they reluctantly replaced the trans. They never gave me a good reason as to what went wrong. BMW doesn't service transmissions in the field they just replace them with re-manufactured units and send the broken ones back to be re-manufactured.

Anyway the point of my story is that the only time I ever broke a BMW transmission it was that ZF.

I've beaten the hell out of Getrags in both my M42 turbo club race car and my S50 powered cabrio and knock on wood both transimissions are still working great. The other interesting note is that we have been running 300 plus hp thru the Getrag 240 in the race car for the last year without any issues. We keep a spare with us when we go racing.

Another interesting note is that my 95 M3 was a daily driver and I never autocrossed or tracked it. I was however the 2nd owner and the original owner told me how great the car was to autocross. No telling how hard he drove that thing before he sold it.

I never drove it in between it being seemingly fine and being hard to drive.

Shift pins. Easy and cheap to service, at least if the transmission is out.

Although, I'd start by pulling out your clutch stop.

Found out the selector rod was seized on the bottom of the ball on the bottom of the lever. What sucks was I didn't find this out until I took out my transmission.
