    Do I need a new/different Transmission?

I am planning on doing an engine swap but I called some place and they gave me a price on the labor and engine but did not specify whether or not a diff. transmission was needed. I am not a mechanic so I wouldn't have a clue but I am guessing that it does. So do I?

    Thanks,
    Tony

the Getrag 260 (E30 6cyl) transmission is said to be a direct fit.
If you are coming from a 318 of any sort the transmission will most definately not fit.

now that I read further into all this stuff, some people say it doesn't line up perfectly, and that new/different/custom mounts are necessary.
I'd wati till someone else chimes in, my M50 isn't in yet.

          Read the thread.

Until then, yes, the e30's getrag 260 will bolt up to the m50, albeit at a slight angle. You either need to have the flywheel lightened and some material removed from the front face of it, or grind down a couple castings on the oil pan. And you should fabricate a new transmission mount bracket to account for the angle of the tranny.

But like I said, read the twin cam thread. It has all that info and much, much more.

What will happen if the flywheel isnt lightened and some material removed from the front face of it, or grind down a couple castings on the oil pan???????:(

if you don't do that, when you go to turn over your motor it will not spin.

Put a 22/24mm? wrench on the front of the engine. If it spins, you're ok. If it doesn't, you're not ok.

i would pull the tranny off and check the clearance... if the motor is out of the car, you don't have an excuse not to.

if the flywheel is pinched against the oil pan, it doesn't matter if the trannys in gear or not. do yourself a favor, remove the 6 or so bolts, then the trans and check it.

Yep sure shit it didnt turn over.... i ended up taking it all apart and got the flywheel resurfaced and also on the back side of the flywheel had .060 takin off, and now its all good and turns over :)
