    OBD2 s52 E30 Possible?

Anyone running an OBD2 s52 in an E30? Just bought a 97 M3 and was told to go OBD1 to run in E30. I didnt realize i could run OBD2 in an E30 if you have matching EWS with key. This would save me a lot of time and headache if possible.

Any info on what problems/complications lie ahead and/or any advice you would have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Search around on the board here, there are plenty of guys who have done the research and made it happen. Lots of OBD-2 cars running around now.

I've personally run an OBD-1 S52 in an E30, so I'm biased to think that is a super easy route. Can't imagine OBD-2 being any easier. If I did it again, even with all of the OBD-2 conversion info and resources out there I'd still go OBD-1. But with OBD-2 you get the benefit of much more advanced software and a better diagnostic interface.

You can do OBD2 even without the EWS and key. I can delete the EWS from the ECU.

I was going to sell this guy an obd1 kit to run his s52 in his e30, but after further discussion I learned that he had a parts car e36 m3. I suggested getting the motor running in the car and verifying that all was well with the motor before swapping.

I also suggested running obd2 as a way to save money and simplify his swap if he has all the parts already, and all he has to do is RESEARCH more and get in touch with the right guy willing to give him a few pointers on obd2.

He has the key that should start the car so ews wont be a real concern.

Help this guy out fellas. He is doin his best!

keeping the engine obd2 will save you a ton of money unless you happen to stumble on to obd1 parts really cheap. harness, sensors, and 413 ecu will normally cost you between 200 to 400 dollars. plus ecu reflash.

etxxz has a thread here titled something like wiring kamasutra. i have a thread titled "flyboyx's obd2 swap blog" mikee30 has a thread as well but i don't remember the tittle. all of those are pretty recent within the last year or so and will provide you with enough info to get the job done. most importantly, they include the trials, tribulations, mistakes and the fixes to them. on my thread, there are a few minor errors in the wiring diagrams that i haven't taken the time to go back in and fix.

a word of advice... do your own wiring research. don't just take someone's diagram and assume it is the gospel for your application. sit down with the diagrams and figure out each wire connection on your own before you proceed with that part of your swap. if you do indeed decide to use obd2, you are more than welcome to pm me with any questions. i will be really happy to help you out any way i can.

            Great stuff fly boy.

I told him to send his harness away to get re wired by eric t or someone who knows it well. We are trying to keep it as simple as possible.

With not much prior knowledge on reading and enterpreting wiring diagrams I advised him to have it done for him.

I would HIGHLY suggest doing the wiring yourself.

If you do it yourself and something goes wrong, you know how you did it and you can fix it.

              It's not hard.

Thats hard to say matt, cuz not everyone has access to something like alldata to verify the wiring... I know there are write ups here on the forums, but honestly some people are not up for the task...

But your right... Moving pins is easy.

You don't need alldata. I don't have anything like that. I don't trust the writeups either.

You can download wiring diagrams from here: http://wedophones.com/BMWManualsLead.htm

That and a multimeter will tell you everything you need to know. :)

Just use the ETM's for the wiring. They are pretty accessible..

Thank man. THose threads are very helpful. THis swap is going to be a lot simpler than i expected now that i can run OBD2 and don't have to convert.

Im going to do as much research as I can about the wiring but i think ultimately i am just going to send it out to whomever turbo325i recommends.

Car is ready to be started, just waiting on the MAF from turbo325i....!!

Very excited to get her pulled.
