Alright, my steering rack is driving me fking nutssss!!!!!!

Ok, so i was gonna swap that lil shit for the one out of the e36 ..great. Did the firewall mod, mocked it up, didn't need to mess with the firewall but the damage is done..great. Then i go join all the splined ends together and i was in trouble. I had to push the rod coming out of the car all the way in and the rod on the steering rack half way in, in order for the subframe holes to line up. I was so damn happy it was awesome. Then i go to put the compression bolt in those clamps with the splines and oh snap..bolt won't go thru, the stupid rod is pushed in too much and the indention for the bolt is now covered by metal. So, i got pissed and left it there.

My question is, how safe is it to mount rack to the front set of holes on the subframe instead of the rear set? (on my subframe there is 2 rows of holes on each side)

    Thanks

P.s Oh the steering rack is from an e36 318ti . My car is a 91 318is, airbag car.

also, how much does the back of the flywheel needs to be shave to clear the oil pan

Did you loosen and compress the steering shaft? Airbag cars have a collapsible shaft, thats part of the reason it's so easy to do the e36 rack swap to them.

changing the mounting holes will affect akerman and bump steer. They dont line up anyways.

the shaft with the guibo looking thing was completely out. Or are you talking about the big nut behind the brake pedal?

The big nut behind the brake pedal. Loosten it and compress the shaft until the universal is back into place.

I've thought about that, but i wasn't gonna mess with it til i was sure lol. So, loosen that big ass nut ( boy that's gonna be a bitch), and pull it back untill i can push the bolt thru?

Yup. It's simple actually, it shouldn't be that tight.

Thanks man, you're awesome. I was just sayin that, cuz there's not much room there, but i got the seat out so i can lay down pretty comfortably

I would just tell him to lighten it. It should clear after that. You might have to bring it back though

does the nut on the column have to be completely off/loose? and is the thing collapsible by hand or do i have to get the bfh out?

The nut doesn't have to be that loose. And the shaft should slide easy. And when I did my 318 I had to shave about 1/4 inch to the bottom left if you are in the engine bay. It will line up with steering rack. Easy mod. Good luck

I got it figured out and i had to hit the shaft with a hammer to get it to slide in, all in all rack is in and very tight with the local hardware store spacers lol.
