    How many woodruff keys?

I am not getting any response from bimmerforums.

But how many woodruff keys are needed between the crank gears and the timing chain cover? I only found one, but from what it looks like from Realoem, it looks like they say there is 2.

There is one for the chain sprockets and one for the harmonic damper/crank pulley.

^^^ MAtt, when you say chain sprockets, are you talking about the ones that I would have to remove the oil pan for? I cant figure out a way to get them out unless I remove the chain which looks like I have to remove the oil pan to get to.

How much of your motor is already apart? What are you trying to do?

Head off, intake and exh mani off, front timing cover off, chain off and both guide rails off. I am just doing preventative maintenance and replacing the rails and woodruff keys while my headis at the machine shop.

On the crank, there are woodruff keys under the hub and under the sprockets. Two of them.

Perfect, thanks. I am just going to replace the hub woodruff key because the sprocket one requires removal of the oil pan, and the hub woodruff key did not look like it had much of a problem anyway. I am thinking that the sprocket woodruff key is fine too.
