    My first rebuild - S50

    I decided to rebild my engine because it was making a sound that sounded like bent valves. 3 different BMW techs told me it was bent valves, but after taking the head off, the machine shop told me that there was no problem with the head or valves. So I got it machined anyway.

    Looks like a mirror - ooohhhhh

    The shop didnt label the trays though - so I dont know which one is exhaust or intake


    OR


    But I am guessing by the "E" it means exhaust



    I am going to replace 1 woodruff key - not both because I have to remove the oil pan and lift the engine and take off the mounts for that.


    My old woodruff key looked like this after using pliers to take it out - so I think the gear woodruff key should be okay.


    Might supercharge in the future - so I am putting these in.


    Supposedly our engines can make up to 500hp on stock heads. But I am gonna put in nice headbolts anyway.

    Nothing special like a turbo build. But it is my first rebuild, so I putting it out there.

    E actually is for something like Einlass (inlet)
    A is for Auspuff, exhaust

    Look at the cam caps, they're also identified with a letter / number combo describing which side it's supposed to be on, as well as the position (1-7, 1 being at the front of the engine).

        Newer motors have "Ein" and "Aus" on the VANOS/camshafts as well. Easy way to remember is just to say them aloud (Ein sounds like IN, while Aus sounds like OUT)

        Just to re-iterate something for the 3rd time.

            Don't forget the little oil check valve thingy on the bottom. It screws in. I replaced mine. $20 from BMW.

              my key fell off too last time i rebuilt it (but not the first time) so i freaked out when my crank pulley didnt "lock" i was like wtf i can't time my engine looked on real oem and saw the piece separated. I found it like 3days later... what a total newb i am

              what is the function of this valve? i couldn't figure it out.
