Questions about PCV system and engine smoke

    car is E30 with S52

ok so my engine is an S52. i swapped out the manifold for an OBD1 manifold and removed the OBDII PCV system completely (Cyclone separator). im still using the OBDII valve cover and literally have just adapted a large hose from the valve cover to an OBD1 valve cover fitting that is attached to a hose which goes under the OBD1 manifold and reattaches to the intake boot.

my question is when i had my 98 M3 and i swapped out the manifold for the OBD1 manifold i specifically remember leaving in the OBDII Cyclone separator and just rerouting the hoses using some DIY guide i found on bimmerforums. and that was it.

is it bad that i removed the Cyclone separator and kept the OBDII Valve cover ? could this be causing my blue oil smoke symptoms and apparent oil loss makign me think the rings are bad and burning oil?

i still have the cyclone separator and im thinking i should reinstall it with the factory fittings.

    any help much appreciated

No info, but I'm about to install and obd2 cover on my s50 and would like to know the answer to this.

I used the OBDI PCV valve on its original hose adapted to fit the OBDII valve cover by slipping (and clamping) a piece of 3/4 heater hose with a plastic couple in it into a 1" piece of heater hose which coincidentally fit perfectly over the nipple on the valve cover.

You need to either have the cyclone separator or the OBDI PCV valve in there not just a straight open shot from valve cover vacuum to intake boot.

i saw pictures online that showed the little vacumm line that goes from the little nipple on the OBD1 PCV valve to the little nipple on the plastic IACV fitting that snaps under the intake manifold that has what looks like another check valve or filter thing.

i just have a straight line going from that little hose to the intake mani for vacuum is that right?

i have oil consumption problems and i would like to help reduce that and i think a cyclone separator will help that but i cant seem to figure out how to adapt the bottom ot the cyclone separator to the e34 dip stick tube since the cyclone separator drains back into the oil pan.

I believe Hoveringuy covered it in his m54 swap thread. Iirc he welded an extra nipple onto the tube for the hose to go onto. If you have the separator already I guess this is one way to go. The OBDI valve is easy as shit to put in though I'm telling ya. I'll post some pics tommorow maybe (after I get my airbox finished)

yea i have the OBDI valve in place just like you do and it doesnt do shit for me right now. engine smokes like crazy and i burn oil.

i want the PCV system back in place like stock and if it still does the same thing then i know for sure its mechanical such as Rings or valves etc.

i would hate to do a tear down and re build only to find out later it was something simple as PCV system.

on side note im wondering why when i have the engine running sand i remove the oil cap that my engine doesnt start bogging down from a huge vacuum leak?

i thought that if you left the oil cap off or removed it with the engine running that the engine would bog down due to a vacuum leak.

when i remove my oil cap i get no change in sound or engine status as if the cap was still in place.

Well do you have the valve installed in the correct orientation and not backwards?

Yes i made sure its installed the correct direction.

do you know where i can see a picture or diagram of the proper OBDI PCV Hose routing?

i tried real oem but thats not really helpful, only parts and the diagrams arent that detailed.

Routing a hose directly from the intake tract to the valve cover is not going to cause smoking and oil consumption. I did this for years (and how it is stock anyways) and had zero smoke and zero oil consumption, with 7000 mile oil change intervals none the less. I would get a film of oil in the intake manifold, though.

If you're getting smoke or oil consumption, then it's one of two things: 1. Rings are worn 2. Valve guide seals are leaking

Do a leak down to determine which it is.

do you have any pictures of this "valve"? if there is a part that only allows airflow in one direction like a conventional pcv valve on other cars then i have been running without it for over a year now! im running an obd1 valve cover and the fitting that clips into it, but the inside of the fitting is open and has no restrictions in it. air is free to flow into and out of the valve cover. there is the small nipple that allows vacuum to be applied from the icv fitting/nipple, and the larger nipple that goes to the intake boot.
