Anyway to identify DME with no labels ?

Ive got a DME that has had all the stickers taken off .
Its claimed to be from a '95 M3 but is there a way to tell if I open it up ?

I don't want to crack it open if it won't help .

The instructions that came with my TMS chip mention a label on the factory chip inside that should say if its a 413 or whatever. I haven't installed my TMS chip yet so I don't know for sure if thats true or not.

A couple of factory chips that I have pulled did, in fact, read '413'. It would be worth pulling the screws on the case to check the chip. It might be possible to at least determine what the chip belongs to. Otherwise, I don't know how else to identify the DME.

Well I popped off the top last night and did not see anything resembling a removeable chip , at least nothing like my E30 chip or a GM chip .

But then again I was also on the phone with a chick at the same time .

Is the chip accessible through the bottom ?
If so I will have to buy a tiny assed torx socket to fit the 2-3 tiny bolts that are there .
The rest are a T-15 just like all of the fasteners on the top .

Well, that's your problem right there. :P

Are you sure this is an OBD-I DME (regardless of whether or not it's from a '95 M3)? Post a picture. That will help.

              Thanks for the help .

              Yeah its supposed to be from a '95 3.0 OBDI M3 .

I just took another look at it and it does not seem that even on the backside that there would be a removeable e-prom in there .

              Pics coming up .

Ok heres a few pics :

It looks like that top circuit board can be lifted of tilted up with a little effort .
But it definately does not look like coming in from the bottom would help anything .

This DME is being loaned to me from a buddy and he bought it online as a '95 OBDI M3 DME .
But the guys seem a little shady as the labels are all removed so thats why I'd like to know if there is another way of identifying it from the inside .
I'd like to know what it really is before I try it out , plus he doesn't really know what it is either .

:? I can't tell you for sure what it is from. What I can tell you, though, is that it does not look like any of the OBD-I DME's that I have pulled apart. They have all had a single circuit board with the EPROM at the opposite end of the board from the black connector.

Sounds like a shady deal to me. Why in the world would someone pull off the stickers? Then again why in the world would someone buy a DME without the stickers?

                    Thanks for the insight .

Yes it definately sounds like a shady deal .
I told my buddy that its probably from a hot car so they scratched off the tags with the VIN and everything else .

I will just hold off and compare it to another known good DME .

Does it say Siemens or Bosch anywhere on the boards? Even if it is a 95 M3 DME; if it's from a car with a post 12/94 manufacture date, you're going to have EWS-II issues. I'll look at my silver labeled 413 DME tonight, but I'm sure its a single board.

Didn't the 95 M3's have a silver label 413 DME too? Does that mean all the computers had the same code?

Did not notice any Bosch or Siemens brand writing in there .
I was mainly peeking around for a removeable chip .

The top circuit board on the end where the harness connector is will unsnap and pry up .
But I have not figured out how to get the other end to pop up . :?

                          Teaguer-

I have an M50 DME in my tool box. I can pull the cover off and take a pic if you would like.

                          Let me know.

                            OK thanks .
But I'm really trying to identify what this one is .
Need to know if its worth having or not .

Have you seen any that look like this one inside ?

I have a silver label DME "413" from a 10/95 M3. I took the cover off and it looks nothing like yours...There is a removable EPROM with a factory label and a bunch of numbers. hope that help a little. The one you've got looks like it's an older DME????
