    m50 intake air thermostat ?

i have another swap related question (bought an m50 swapped car, trying to sort out the loose ends the guy who built it left)

i'm trying to tidy things up in the engine bay and sort out the mess, and i came across a part of the cooling system which was not plugged into anything. realoem (part #11) lists it as a thermostat:

    http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...42&hg=11&fg=35

and my research came up with this:

That's the intake temperature sensor. It's not really a thermostat (but it kind of is I guess). It measures intake temperature to cycle the coolant.
It is only to get coolant going AROUND the t-body to keep it warm and the up to temp before going into the motor on really cold days
so, what i gather is that unless it is warm outside, the thermostat stays closed and keeps the coolant cycling through the TB and not cycling back to the block?

i live in a climate where the car will see freezing temperatures. can i delete the thermostat and just connect the lines, or should i leave it and just find a good place for it (not just hanging loosely in the engine bay)?

yeah, what i'm going to do is delete the thermostat and in its place put a valve i can manually open for the winter and close for the summer. that way i can shorten the hoses and clean things up a bit.

Sorry to revive this dead thread, but when you deleted the thermostat did you just connect the two hoses that would be connected to the thermostat together? Ive deleted it because it broke, and now my engine is running hot, is it because i have the hoses flowing freely? should i close them off?

Shouldn't be. I had this thermostat break in my E34 and I simply bypassed the whole thing. Not an issue since. You could try to rebleed the system perhaps?
