    Quicker Gearbox/Diff Combo??? S50

I searched and could not find the ratios for the 260 gear box.

Assuming all things being equal, is the 260/3.73 combo "quicker" than the ZF-Getrag/3.25 when used for an E30/S50. Which overall ratio is taller/shorter than the other?

    TIA

    Getrag 260: 1st 3.83, 2nd 2.20, 3rd 1.40, 4th 1.00, 5th 0.83

    M3's ZF 5spd: 1st 4.21, 2nd 2.49, 3rd 1.66, 4th 1.24, 5th 1.00

Play around with the gear calculator and find out. Seems like the E36 first two gears are slightly longer, but the three top gears get progessively shorter compared to the stock E30 gears.

      Thanks for the quick reply.

Big gap in between 3rd and 4th for the 260...

Along with the gear spacing, consider the weight, reliability and feel of the transmission. The 260 seems to have the E36 trannies beat in those categories.
        I think a 260 with a 3.91 rear would be a good combo.

Agree. When I first did the conversion, it had the 4.10/260. Too much gear for the freeway but a great track gear. the 3.91 seems like a good compromise.

What about the Euro 6 speed? that thing is a tank.

              for an s50 I'd use a 3.25 diff
3.73 even seemed a little short, 2.93 felt a tiny bit tall

I'm using the 3.73 with the 260 trans... If I had done the ZF, I definately would have started with the 3.25, although a 3.38 would be a nice track gear...

Thanks Jarvis for the gear calc. table. Very handy!

                  Very expensive and very heavy.

Like how heavy? I was thinking of this just for bling factor, and strength.
