What is the "stand alone"? And also if I were to get an Ecu for an m50 vanos from a 1994, what should I get and how much abouts are they?

Stand alone is just that , it does not need the cars DME/ECU to operate the engine .
There are aftermarket management units available that control just the fuel , just the spark or fuel and spark .
Some of the better units can be super pricey though , ever heard of Motech ?
About what ECU to get , just read the twin-cam swap thread .
Check the classifieds on various boards for the going rate .
