and what do you guys usually do with it, i asume that it was attached to the airbox on the m3.(95 s50)

It's a part that heat's the air box to try to get rid of icing of the intake. You can just loop it and get rid of it if you live in a warm climate of CA.

well, not really. its the air intake thermostat, which directs coolant to the throttle body if it is cold outside (opens up). but you can loop it if you are in a place that doesn't get freezing temperatures. i live in a northern climate, so i installed a manual valve.

Close but so very far.
It's the thermostat for the Throttlebody heater lines. It controls the flow of coolant through the TB. Not really sure where the best place to mount it is assuming you aren't using an airbox anymore.
I deleted my TB heater entirely for simplicity and to avoid drilling and tapping my cylinder head for my coolant sender (s52).
I have noticed little or no negative effects throughout the cold fall weather. Sometimes my engine will die if I let off the gas coming to a stop from higher rpms with the engine cold, but I'm not 100% sure that isn't just from the lightweight flywheel on its own.
