Passing smog/inspection with OBDII parts on S50?

I posted this in the California specific section, but I figured I may get a quicker answer if I posted it here as well.

I'm getting close to having all of the pieces I need for my 24v swap except for the exhaust parts. I already have the stock M3 exhaust, but I was wondering if there would be problems passing any part of the inspection if I used OBDII exhaust manifolds and the OBDII midpipe on my S50. I figured that while I have the motor out and don't already have the OBDI pieces, these would be a worthwhile upgrade as they flow better than the stock OBDI counterparts. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Also, is there any difference between the airboxes from OBDI and OBDII cars? I still need the airbox/MAF setup for my car as well.

The smog shop will not be able to tell OBD1 vs. OBD2 stuff. Just do a nice job sealing up the secondary air pump ports on the headers.
    Past Car : E30 S50 6 Speed 5 Lug 3.73
Current : Z3 S50 OBD2 (Smog Legal) 6 Speed BBS RN Dual Ear Diff

They're only testing it as an e30 so it doesn't matter as long as the system pumps out emissions in spec. As long as you have cats and you button up the OBDII header ports you should be fine. I almost passed in CT with no cats and 24lb injectors lol but just failed by a tiny margin. Haha they said my cat was probably on its way out since the car is so old. It was worth a try. The earlier E36's pump out cleaner emissions so you get a little extra wiggle room when they base numbers on the older emissions standard.

Although personally I would just wait a bit and get an obdI header in while the motors out and get the permanent setup in place

        Your in CA?

Good luck getting it to pass emissions. My E30 passed the sniffer with ease, but immediately failed the visual inspection.

To my knowledge, the airboxes are the same.
        My previous build (currently E30-less)

If you want a legit swap you will have to go to a referee and get a BAR sticker.

Others who have done this will chime in I'm sure but,
My understanding is EVERYTHING (airbox, EVAP, exhaust (headers, cats)) has to be FROM THE DONOR CAR.
In this case you will have to tell them that this is an OBDI donor. So it must have ALL OBDI equipment.

            Thanks for the responses everyone.

I have a stock airbox on the way, and already have the OBDI exhaust manifolds and M3 muffler/catback on the way as well. I just need to source an OBDI midpipe.

I think I am just going to stick with OBDI everything to make things as easy as possible.

I forgot how bad nazifornia is, I didn't have to deal with the visual. Forgot to leave with the inspection papers, and when I wen't back it was a different dude who just signed it off and sent me on my way.

Can't imagine a shop looking at a 20 year old car and dissecting it, but I guess thats CA. That's what you get for having ballin' weather year round. poetic justice
