    m50 swap clutch problems

    I tried searching but cant find anything. Im in the middle of a m50 swap for a friend and after replacing the trans and clutch/flywheel(getrag 260 w m20 clutch,t.o. bearing and flywheel) the slave has no resistance when installing it until i can just about get a nut on it,i can push the clutch fork with my finger 3/4 of the way in and barely feel the t.o bearing hit the clutch. In my previous experiences the slave has to be compressed while installing pretty much the whole way.

    I removed the trans and checked everything, the throw out bearing, clutch fork, pivot pin and pivot spring are all installed correctly and the same as the old setup which shifted fine, the slave is also pretty much fully extended and i didnt crack the system and let air in.

    The reason everything was changed was because some pieces of metal were bouncing around in there destroying everything inside and everything was shot in there. I dont know if that matters.

    Im at a loss and dont wanna get everything together and have it not shift.
    Any ideas? am i missing something???thanks for any help.

      Thanks greg,not entirely sure that bleeding is the problem at this point since the pivot has so much free play before the t.o bearing hits the clutch fingers. trying to resolve that first. looks as tho the slave may blow out if i try pressing the clutch pedal in. The clutch fork has no resistance until the slave is almost all the way installed...and the slave is just about all the way extended. Is this normal?

        The slave was reused against my advice when the car was built. Everything flywheel back is standard 325i on the original chassis. Sounds as though the slave is toast.

          If its the slave they have them at Autozone for 28 with a lifetime warranty. just replaced mine a couple weeks ago because I could get the old one to bleed after the swap. This one bled very quickly and is super smooth.

            did you install the m20 pilot bearing for the nose of the tranny input shaft?

              It used all M20 flywheel back as mentioned.

                ok just checking. i have always thought of the pilot bearing as being ahead of the flywheel since its mounted in the engine.

                  Its lookin like its the trans, its off a eta and the input shaft and bell housing are longer than the I trans. Which makes sense since its the only different part were using,maybe its longer to accommodate the dual mass flywheel...does that sound right? and yes i did install a m20 pilot bearing in place of the m50 one. Thanks for all the responses tho. Now we either have to change the output flange or find another trans.

                    ya you likely have a deep bell housing tranny. check and see if its an early eta or late eta. if the part on the tranny is 260.0.1270.90 then its the early deep one. you can probably get around your problem by getting a thicker sachs throwout bearing. I think the 30mm one might work but dont quote me on that.

                      now that i think about it, i think the eta throwout bearing is thicker than the i. do you remember what throwout bearing you threwin there?

                              ok....Just checked realoem.com and verified that the part # for the TOB for the early 325i is the same # for the e28 533i. So that leaves the question....which TOB did the clutch kit come with???
