    Quick shift carrier question...

I am swapping an S50 in my 318i with my G240/M20 Flywheel + clutch.

I have read that the stock e30 carrier works fine, but have also read that the 318 carrier is too long. Do I need the carrier from an e30 325?

Just a yes or no answer should be fine. Thanks

A friend of mine recently completed his swap using this combo and i gave him my old carrier from my 89 325is, is was way too short, barely went into the rear bushing.

He ended up cutting/welding the stock 318is carrier/selector.

Some will say you can use the 325 stuff, i figured i'd add just one experience.

If i remember correctly, I used an e36 325 shift carrier and a modified selector rod. I could not find any car with the correct length selector rod to fit the 240 on the m52. I read somewhere (maybe on here, id have to spend some time searching) that a stock e30 323i euro selector rod is the correct length, but i'm cheap, and i had a buzzbox.

I just put the trans in the car, put it in neutral, and had a friend hold the shifter in the correct neutral position and then measured the length. Then, I cut my 318i m42 selector rod and rewelded it to the correct length. Custom fabricated euro partz!

Edit: Quick search revealed some people used the 320i setup. I have no idea if this works or not, seeing as it came from the internet, its probably wrong.

I went through the same problem with my swap, m52 with g240. You need the selector rod and carrier from an e30 320 (euro with m20 engine). I bought mine from getbmwparts.com for pretty cheap. This is the only combo that will work unmodified. The e30 e18is carrier is way too long, the e30 325 is too short and the e36 carrier is also too short and too low (bottom of my shifter was hitting the driveshaft).

Here are the part numbers you need:

          Shift Carrier - 25111220759
          Selector Rod - 25111220835

This combo puts the shifter right in the center of the opening. One side of the selector rod (front side to transmission) connection is longer than it needs to be so I had to use some washers as spacers to fill in the space. You'll see what I mean when you get the selector rod.

            Herlsy is talking about me.

Honestly your best bet is to just modify the m42/gt240 stuff that you have. The biggest hurdle i had was finding someone that could weld aluminum.

I do not see any way that the 325 stuff would work. Keep in mind that I used the AKG motor mounts. I have a feeling that the motor/trans combo may turn out differently if one uses the flipped e28 motor mounts.

First i started with carrier. Saw where its center ended up which was further back than needed. Then i just got a caliper to measure where it needed to be (center-to-center). Afterward i locked the caliper. I took off the carrier and cut out a section that was the distance of the locked caliper. I then duck-taped the carrier and installed it to make sure the length was right. I did the same with the selector AFTER the carrier was welded.

In theory the amount that was taken off the carrier should be the same as the selector but I would not count on it.

            Hope that helps.

I think I'll just order these then as opposed to cutting and welding my original ones.

              Thanks a bunch!
