First of all, what does that mean? Is that from accidentally downshifting and overreving the engine?...if so, makes me think they have a sub-par tranny. :loco:

Second, what's the usual extent of the damage to the short block to these unfortunate cases? If I were to rebuild one, would the damage just be to the pistons, or would there be further damage to the crank, rods, and bearings?

Its more like "stupid drivers" don't know how to shift.

Usually valves but if its bad the pistons will will be trash.

It's a combination of poor shifting and a lousy transmission design. You can't blame it on either one alone.

I happen to know a National Champion Autocrosser who did the "money shift" on his -at the time A stock- M3 some years back.

Although driver ability may have something to do with it in general, BMW made it too easy (probably not by choice) to select the wrong gear on a change-up.

This is the Primary Reason I did not do the E36 transmission.

That, the oil pump nut issue, and subframe tearing must keep E36 guys awake at night...

It can happen on an e30 transmission too. The reason it seldom does is that the m20 doesn't put out power like the s50. I know of a guy that races an s50 in an e30 with e30 trans and he's done 2 or 3 money shifts. He's a veteran racer and knows how to shift.

You never know what you'll find in the engine until you open it up. I've seen pictures of a piston with a broken-off valve head embedded in it. Probably a worst possible case, the head was cracked and cylinder wall gouged so much the block was trash.

Not to sound Nanny-ish, but if you do a 2 to 1 upshift, It matters nothing how much power the motor is producing...You will gradande it.

I have been driving E30's over a decade, and cannot remember anytime I misshifted an upshift. The worst of it may have been a reluctance to go into second on a slam shift 1-2. I co-drove an E36 STS 328is for Solo2, I was warned by the owner (BMW Master tech) that it was possible to do a wrong shift easy. Yet, I almost did a 2-1 upshift the second event in the car. Total driving time in an E36, less than 5 minutes...

Ive seen tranny mounts that looked like hell on E36s. They but these little bitch-made mounts on them and Ive driven higher mileage E36s and with my hand on the shifter I could feel it move with revving the engine.

And like stated. No matter what you drive if you try and go into third while racing a Honda on a highway like the average E36 M3 owner does something bad is gonna happen.

My tranny doesnt let me into first or second unless Im going slow enough, even with the clutch in. I imagine youd have to hammer it into third to get it to go.

Well, I just picked up an S50 shortblock. Victim of an overrev, but looks to have suffered minor damage. The cylinder walls are flawless, the pistons really aren't bad...probably reuseable. Although I'll have it ripped apart and replace the pistons anyway. I'll probably go with some JE pistons...with all of the stuff done to the cylinder head I have, I might as well go all out.

I bought the cylinder head a year ago, and bought the short block this year. Maybe this time next year I'll have it done. I just need to buy a house first...with a garage to do the swap. Of course, once I buy a house, I'll be too poor to finish the damn thing... :roll:
