Yeah, I hear ya. I was looking for a lower rpms at crusising speed and wondered about it. I figured I would ask before doing it. I will probably go the 6speed route instead!

I was looking at swapping out trans for a Getrag 265 with OD 5th daily driver. Would the 265 need the modified cross member as used for the 260? I have the removalable bell housing from an eta. As I understand the m/s50,m20 have same bolt patter for trans.
First off, why do you want to use a G265? Because it is likely not worth it, especially seeing as you already sourced a different driveshaft for the ZF.

If you have already sourced the bell housing from the E28 eta, then you will be able to bolt it up to any M5x/S5x, however since there is about 10 degrees of extra slant angle going from an M20 to a DOHC motor the trans will be "twisted" over some, and you will likely need a custom trans brace.

Again, though, I cannot see a good reason to do so. The 265/6 has almost identical gear ratios to the G260, and the ZF is really better suited to an S5x anyway as the first gear is a little taller and less useless. Save the removable bell housing for a dogleg 265!

im running the zf320 out of a 95 m3 with my m50 and a 3.73 diff, makes for a stupid quick combo but it fits my driving environment alright. keep researching and figure out whats best for you. everybody elses advice has helped this ongoing swap obsession.

the US e30 and E36 clutches are completely interchangeable(im sure euro is the same, but not 100% sure), so any combination of clutch components will be the same

Yeah first gear is kinda sad, really easy to peel out in the rain. Feels like first gearing is holding you back. I never pull on people in 1st, have to get to 2nd to go anywhere.

Good news is that I don't have to shift from stop sign to stop sign when I'm lazy, just leave it in 2nd and go.

How is the 260 / 4.10:1 combo??? I've heard that 1st gear is worthless with this gearing. Guess I'll find out first hand next week, ha

The Euro TO bearing is thicker. I believe it effects pedal travel.

question regarding throwout bearings. Why is it for the getrag 240's you need to use the euro throwout bearing? Never received or found a definitive answer on this...
