My friend had a similar HG blowout. He was just driving the speed limit in 5th gear, and there was an imperceptible hiccup and the engine started to stumble a bit, then he shut it down. I guess it was just bad luck!

After 06/95 (IIRC) they went to the late model valve retainers, or S52 retainers as they carried them into the S52 series of engines. Definately look at it early on. It's well worth the hassle of tearing it down to know that you're not going to explode gloriously on the side of the highway.
Which is it? I am lookin at an 06/95 M3 motor and trans
After using my good friend google it seems they fixed it 10/95, so i am going to have to replace them! Grrrr
Check the VIN with a dealer, a lot of them have had the replacement done. In my eyes though, whether they were done or not, its still a 15 year old head, could use a full refresh. Thats what I did to mine. Full rebuilt head.

How much did that end up costing you? I planned on it myself, if i am going to put all this work and effort into putting a motor in it better be as good as new!
I had a full rebuild, cost me about 1200 I think, about 5 years ago.
That's roughly about right. To get everything you need and an idea on pricing, Realoem.com saved my ass.
$1,200 sounds reasonable with machine shop costs and finding a shop that wont anal molest you. My recent experience with machine shops ranged from $300-$1000. And that entailed them doing pretty much nothing more than stripping and pressure testing. I found a guy who is an amazingly reknowned Machinist in the BMWCCA Puget Sound Chapter that nailed it under $200 for tearing down, installing retainers, valve seals, pressure testing, cleaning and a small hair cut.
