I apologize if this was discussed before but I cant find it. Does anyone know what temperature the S52 should be operating at? I had mine at almost 200 def F and decided to shut it down. Thanks!

Yes, I was bleeding the system and I thought the bleed looked good. Capped my expansion tank. The Thermostat opened cause my radiator hose was hard but my temp gage kept rising, and I didn't want to do anything stupid so I shut it down when it almost hit 200 deg F. Do you know what temp range the S52 is suppose to run at? Thanks for your input.
I dont know what thermostat I'm running.

Well I think you have more air to bleed out or you thermostat is sticking. What's your cooling setup?
I believe. The OEM thermostat is a 180 so you car should run from 180+ to -190 some place in there is safe. Also what are you running for fans84 318I Delphin RIP

They run pretty close to 200 for emissions.
I would do a couple more bleed sessions.
Squeeze the lower radiator tube to help get rid of any airlock at the Tstat.
I usually drill a small hole in the rim of the thermostat, and locate the hole at 12 o clock, to minimize air locks.
Once the car is in motion temps should drop.
You did not mention if the auxillary fan came on... It should have if the system is well bled.

+1 on the fan I forgot to ask that.
My thermostat came with a hole in it but it has a kind of a check valve built in so it only works one way.Last edited by 416stroker; 02-19-2011, 12:38 PM.84 318I Delphin RIP

Thanks for all your input. I guess my thought was that I wasn't letting it get high enough. How high before I start to do damage? 230 F?
Here's my set up, I have no heater core, and I blocked off the back of the head and have my expansion tank going into the water pump. I have a spal pusher fan wired to the thermo switch in the radiator. I have the low temp 80 C thermo switch. I jumped the switch and the fan kicked on, so I know thats working. My thermostat did open, the upper rad hose was hard and hot....... ehem..... I do have a hole drilled in my thermostat at 12:00.
Here's my thought though, if I have the stock 92c thermostat, that's 197.6 F, it may have just opened and I didn't let it go long enough for the radiator to get to 176 F. I'm thinking of getting the 71C thermostat from Turner. This car is a track car. Good idea? Thanks guys, check out my build threads if you want to see the setup.

Yea, I would chicken out at 230°, but I believe it can take more. Not gonna try though.
200 is fine op-temp, especially standing still. You might want to get the 80°C stock bmw tstat, I use it in my M50 to keep temps down especially on track.
Not sure about the 71° tstat, being under op-temp isn't good either. You'd probably have a harder time keeping it there on cooler days casual driving.

What I found on the stock thermostats was 88 and 92. I didn't find an 80

The same engine can be run with different thermostats. Higher temps are usually used for emissions purposes, but what I think really matters is at what temp does the ECU consider fully warmed up? If you drop below that, the car may forever be in warmup enrichment, which would be seriously retarded.
