Internally the 14589 has an angled pipe. It is still "straight through", however, as the pipe remains at the same size throughout the entire can, and is a straight shot between inlet and outlet.
It won't make a difference one way or the other; you might get slightly more clearance to the axle halfshaft by choosing an offset in muffler.
For better pricing on Magnaflow stuff, there are some Ebay vendors that have a "Best Offer" option. I got $20 off MSRP on my muffler with free shipping.

I want to learn more on single straight-thru exhaust sizes for a stockish m20. Pro's and con's to sizing. I don't think I ever got a definite answer from reading/searching.
edit: nvm, I read the title again and realized I'm thread jacking.Leave a comment:

Damn I wish I could get on youtube.
I plan on going with a SINGLE 3 inch exhaust. Thanks for all of the input.Leave a comment:

Cool.
OK, everything sounds good, until the last part of your exhaust. To connect a single 3" pipe to a 2.25" pipe, you'd just be introducing a flow restriction.
If you want to run dual tips, get a reasonably sized 5x11 muffler (example: Magnaflow 14589), and get single in, dual out aftermarket exhaust tips. They have nice and shiny ones that look expensive. You will most likely have to get a 2.25" inlet tips and chop off the 2.25" pipe, and carefully modify the remainder of the Y to accept a 3.0" OD exhaust pipe. Fitment will be tight with a 22" long muffler like a 14589, but it will be doable if you chop the muffler inlet and outlet a bit.
Another tip: If you plan on going turbo, and using a 3.0" turbo-back exhaust, you should place the header y-merge right behind the headers, and negotiate the transmission tunnel hump with 3.0" pipe. That way you won't have to buy two more 45° 3.0" bends later on, which aren't super expensive, but still cost some money especially in stainless.
I will just buy this one:
(Part #11219)
Free Shipping - MagnaFlow Performance Mufflers with qualifying orders of $109. Shop Mufflers at Summit Racing.
It is 8"x2" smaller and cheaper(not polished) I am painting everything black.
Here is the one you listed to compare, everything is the same but the design:
(Part #14589)

Nando, you're car is friggin quiet!
Anyway here was my 3" set-up:
3" > Monstrous 26" Accelarator Muffler > 3" > 3" Vibrant Street Power Muffler
Not as nice as my 2.5" set-up with the Borla Pro-XS in the middle and Vibrant at the end.
The Vibrant made the exhaust loud, but it's my favorite sounding muffler hands down!Leave a comment:

Here is the issue, I don't have the funds to go from swap to turbo. So I bought some headers till I can afford to boost. So my plans were to fab a Y pipe to a single 3" then another Y to that single inlet magnaflow(14816) Then when I could afford it make another exhaust system. And it is cheap for me to do this. My Uncle owns a garage and I can get piping at cost and bend everything in house.

if you have a turbo, things like an X pipe are totally pointless. The pulses already merge at the turbo. And anyway a single pipe with a Y is just as effective, lighter, and cheaper.
I conclude that you have NFC, but I'm willing to help if you're willing to listen. ;)Leave a comment:

Yup, I have a goal for the M50/turbo but I know I am not going to be anywhere 8s or close to that. I am aiming to beat my friends STi.
I just think the 2.5 duel with equal pipes to a X pipe will pull the exhaust out better and increase performance. That is why I am going for dual piping.Leave a comment:

"duel" haha
dude, there are plenty of people running way more power than you ever will on exhausts much smaller than dual 2.5". I'm thinking Donovan specifically. He was running *maybe* single 4", on a car that ran 8's.Leave a comment:

there is no point - run single 3" or 2.5" piping all the way back. Dual 3" is hilarious! are you pushing 1000hp or something? ;)Leave a comment:

What is the point of having dual piping all the way back and then use a single inlet/outlet exhaust? The exhaust looks like the one I posted on the last page aka 14816. I changed my mind on the dual 3" piping all the way back. It makes it clean going down to 2.5 since my headers are 2.5 outlet. Also opens up more options and I did not like how spaced the 3" outlet was. The 2.5 is really clean and straight through the body with no restrictions.Last edited by F34R; 02-24-2011, 12:44 PM.Leave a comment:

that's ginourmous. that's like a single 4" exhaust. all you're doing is adding a bunch of weight so you can have 2 tips instead of one..Leave a comment:
