Where did you go? AIM shit out and you were gone when I signed back in...
But like I was saying the starters were changed in 86/12 if I remember correctly. They were changed because BMW changed out the fly wheels to a dual mass to make the transmission smoother.
Here is the link to RealOEM to prove it.
(87/01 They still used the old starter but the new one is also in use for the 325i motor) If I remember right the 325e came with the single mass till the model was removed entirely.
I did buy a parts car(87 325e) for the engine and starter for my DD(86 325e) like I stated on AIM. It had a dual mass fly and I swapped out for the single mass I had in my DD and used the dual mass starter on the single mass with no issues. They slotted together like my broken starter. So I don't know what to say, if I were you buy/look for a starter with the part # in the first link to the older single mass fly. Since that is what you are planning on using. The M20 starter will bolt up to the M50.
Recap:
Used part car engine and starter that was on a dual mass fly, then junked my old engine and starter(broken) and used my single mass & Sachs clutch/plate from that(86 325e) paired with the engine/starter from the 87 325e parts car. The older starters are larger(single mass) and the dual ones are smaller. I did not check out the flywheels if there were different type single mass in the later years.
Hope that helps man.Last edited by F34R; 02-27-2011, 03:59 PM.~ Puch Cafe. ~ Do business? feedback ~ Check out my leather company ~

I had a "big" starter from my '87 325e and it wouldn't mount correctly on the motor without grinding down part of the motor. I believe you will need a small starter. As for the flywheel I'm not sure, but 325e came with a dual mass, but I used a 325i single mass flywheel and a 325i small starter.
