    S50 Fuel Delivery

On my way home from Parker's shop at around the 1 mile from home marker, I started to get a stutter. Nothing serious, just a mild stutter or hesitation. I live in a mountain of a hill. 16% grade hill that's 5/8th's of a mile long and curvy. Sitting at the front gate waiting for them to open I give it a rev up to 4,000rpm. No issues. As soon as I get under load at all it hesitates again and stutters a bit. Now I get to the hill and it starts cutting out completely. I mean, 3,000rpm to nearly stalling to catching itself and hopping back up to 3,000.

Fuel pump or fuel filter? Sender in the tank or side of the car? Thoughts on where I should look. I have a physical and a blood draw tomorrow so, I'll be driving the S10 to that and coming home to get it squared away.

Much like it's running out of Fuel.

I haven't had time since 11:30 last night to find out. I'm delving into it now. I know the code is throwing some type of code as the CEL is on but I haven't pinned it down entirely.

Fuel filter/pump has a distinct ticking type sound. Runs fine except under load...

So, IIRC there's two pumps on an early model (mine is an '86). One in the tank (sender) and one near the fuel filter behind the driver's door, correct? When I turn my key to "on" but don't crank it it's normal to hear the pump behind the driver's door "prime", correct? All I'm hearing is a tick or, nothing at all.

I'll look at the main relay and fuel pump relay as well. Can someone point me with pictures as to where these are more specifically located? I think I'm looking at the right ones but, I'd like to be positive ;)

            Thanks in advance.

The pump doesn't always prime. Very often, but not always.

I'll replace the pump and filter with known working ones and see if that does anything, then move more into diagnosing. A bit backwards but I'm really thinking that the way the pump sounds just isn't correct. The ticking and loss of fuel when on an incline just scream a failing pump. Fuel pressure gauge is being picked up as well.

I think mine also ticked just before it died. Even when car was level.

Yeah, mine's ticking when level. Actually, it just stopped doing it at all and the car will not start. Cranks like a mother though ;)

You can try knocking on the pump or get a second battery and jump it with 12V. You might get a couple more hours out of it ;)

Fffffffuuuuuuu... got a fuel pump from Parker and Criv. From their early model.

Mine looks completely different. What in the hell.

Relay jumped and no go with two pumps. Fuck me this is irritating.

So have you checked for power at the connector? You're sure you're jumping the right relay and that you're doing it right (I chased my tail last weekend because I read the diagram on the side of the relay wrong)

So was it revving 3k down to almost stalling with no load at all in neutral or was it while you were driving up the hill?

Driving up hill. The pump is for sure bad. Both of them. Jumpered the main relay #30 to #87 of the fuel pump relay, received 12v at the fuel pump wires. It's solid. It's the fuel pump almost 100%. We'll see once I pick up a new one.
