    Question about S50 cam cover

I bought an S50 that turns out to be a basket case. The boy who sold it to me had partially disassembled the cylinder head and I believe a part is missing. According to the Bently manual, there is a cover over the intake cam. It is part number 1 here on RealOEM: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...07&hg=11&fg=15

Can anyone enlighten me as to what this part is, where it goes, and what it does?

    Thanks in advance.

It is a splash shield that is located over the intake camshaft.
The function is to catch the oil that is flung off the cam, then directs it to drop back on that cam for lubrication, and some cooling.

It is required because the engine is slanted. If it is not used, the flung oil hits the cam cover and drains toward the exhaust side of the head, then drops into the galley where it drains back to the sump.

Would there be any benefit of using an additional cover over the exhaust cam?

I ask because I disassembled my head yesterday, and the exhaust cam is significantly more worn under the caps than the intake cam.
