Vanos CEL 1266, car won't stay running. sound terrible

My car will only start sometimes, and when it does the idle surges for a second or two and then dies.

    Throwing me a CEL 1266.

It sounds like my timing is off (awful loud popping type noises), although I had been driving the car before this so did the vanos just break and is now stuck on advanced timing? I swapped out solenoids but nothing changed.

I don't really know what to do. Any suggestions?

Also just got a new 140amp alternator if that makes any sort of difference.

    Fried DME?
    Cam sensor?

    edit: obd1 m52... so essentially just a m50tu

got a new cam sensor, it will actually run now but wont idle. misfires in low RPM's so i'm guessing vanos is stuck advanced?

and some oil was leaking out of where the knock sensor is near the vanos solenoid i don't know if it was just not tight enough. if that makes any sort of difference

      WAT DO?

Never heard of vanos getting stuck. I dont think this is your problem but the oil leak is prob the vanos line.
