    not sparking, obd1 s52+5mt into e34it swap

    wondering if anyone had some time to help with a puzzle im having on a e34 touring 5mt+ s52 swap.


    crank with key - yes
    fuel pump power on by ecu- yes
    does not seem to spark, will crank happily forever and not fire. will not idle or misfire with starter fluid when cranking

    My initial guess if car was not a swap would be a crank/cam sensor or bad afm?



    car is 92 m50 nonvanos it, wiring harness was removed and a e34 525 automatic vanos wiring harness replaced it.

    S52 is from my own e36m, drove a couple months before removing engine and swapping e34 oil pan. Transmission is 5 speed ZFsg320, reverse wiring has been hooked up. everything cranks, spins, etc etc.

    engine is s52 converted to OBD1 sensors (cam position, crank, 2x knock, m50 nonvanos throttle body with its tps, obd1 intake manifold with its air temp sensor, fuel rail from m50 non vanos kept. OBD1 vanos solinoid and airflow meter installed as well.

    I have followed the e34 5mt swap threads for the reverse switch and tcu grounding, tcu is removed

    ECU is RED label dme, non EWS, virgin un-opened but I do have a TMS chip to use.

    when IGN+ is turned to on, the ecu is triggering the fuel pump relay to power fuel pump.

    Auto Starter wiring in fusebox was triggered by replacing the OEM bosch 4 pin relay with OEM e34 5 speed relay bypass (dead relay thing).



    car cranks, all 6 coil packs have 12v+ @ ign on position, and they are all grounded when checked with multimeter

    the trigger of coils are not seeming to activate by ECU, as with a coil connected and spark plug installed it will not produce spark or ground to chassis when cranking.

    Also Tried spraying starting fluid in intake path to see if its sparking and the fuel injectors are not firing, but car wont run off starter fluid, so it seems I do not have spark.

    will M50 run on one of the cam/crank sensors only?I tried to unplug them individually to fire and nothing happened.

    Will a bad AFM prevent the car from starting? will try firing up with DME unplugged later today.


    could my DME be bad? it does trigger fuel pump immediately when key is turned to IGN+ position, so the main relay seems to be getting power.

    I can drop by with my oscilliscope and we can look at all the sensors since you are in the bay area.

    Spark is completely reliant on the crank position sensor. So start there and work your way out.

      thanks JD for the tech support.

      Chased ETK and found the issue, CPS was plugged into Oil pan sensor- apparently the harness lengths are pretty spot on too.
