Clutch and Flywheel for 240 Trans

    Hi All,

Just getting ready to pull my M42 out and swap in a 98 S52. I will be using the 240 trans from my 91 318is. I read that resurfacing the dual mass is a bad idea /or can't be done, I would really like to keep the stock flywheel (it works with my starter). I can buy a new one for about $675 along with the stock clutch for an e36 will this work with my trans? I know a number of you have kept your 240 but used the single mass m20 flywheel machined on back for clearance but I want to stay with a stock weight as this will be a street only car and would rather have smooth off the line starts. Any and all opinions would be appreciated. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SACHS...Q5fAccessories

    Thanks,

    Seth

Why would you buy a brand new flywheel? and one for 675 for that matter? I bought a dual mass e36 325i flywheel and clutch setup. The m3 won't fit in the bellhousing.

I was under the impression that the e36 and the M3 flywheel were pretty much the same the same, M3 is a few pounds lighter, what clutch did you use and did you get the e36 325 flywheel new or did you resurface it. Will this combo work with my trans...

      Thanks,

      Seth

          m3 flywheel/clutch won't fit in the 240. use m20 clutch/flywheel/starter. it's light and cheap.

              Since we're on this topic...

Just to clarify - what throwout bearing can I use? I know its been said so often to use the 323i throw out bearing but does a normal 325 one not work? And which M20 clutch do I use? 325i clutch kit or 325e (both for single mass flywheels).

You have to get a SMF and shave it. Or get a euro 323i flywheel like I did. No shaving needed.

323i TOB, 325i clutch, shave flywheel ~1/4" or grind away some of the sleeve around the long bolts on the back of the oil pan.

                    a 323i TOB and 325i TOB ( e30 ) are the exact same

Im using s 325 TOB, single mass fly, 325i clutch kit, 240 slave cyl, 240 tranny

car runs funs and drives fine

Lies. I had them side by side before I did my swap. My 325i (m20) clutch kit came with one and I had bought a 323i TOB seperately. Somewhere on the interwebz, someone took a picture of them side by side. They ARE different.

If the 325 one works, I would use it. I used a 323i TOB and it was an extra $80 that I apparently didn't need to spend. I think it would just move the enagement point in the pedal. I like how mine is though. I wouldn't change it.

Matt and I discussed this before and I ended up using the 323i euro TOB as well. The part numbers matched which didnt make sense to me either. I havent driven the car yet so I can't comment as to it working or not.. hah. I'll dig up the old convo when I get home.
