The m42 radiator is a pain to bleed correctly and completely. I sold one and was accused of selling a clogged radiator because the buyer couldn't figure out how to bleed it. It takes a LOT of patience. Make sure you are getting the bleed screw high, it helps to catch bubbles. I jacked my drivers side up whenever I would bleed.

Or, do what I did and replace it with an e36 aluminum radiator and an e30 expansion tank.

Ok, i was having a very similar issue with my swap, so ill share the technique i used to bleed the system.

Fill the expansion tank all the way up, about an inch or so from overflowing. Now alternate between squeezing the upper and lower radiator hoses. If your coolant level drops, add more and keep squeezing the hoses. Do this until you cant squeeze anymore.

Now go ahead and start the car with the radiator cap on and the bleed screw closed. Let the engine warm up to operating temp. Now, crack the bleed screw and give the engine a few revs. You should first have a lot of bubbles which will quickly change to a stream of coolant. When you no longer see bubbles, close the screw and youre done.

At this point you may or may not need to add more coolant. I should also add that i had my drivers front wheel up on a ramp to get the bleeder at the top of the system.

This method worked great for me and took all of 15 minutes.

I don't see the big deal with bleeding the m42 radiator, I bled mine in a few minutes.
