Oil leak at Tranny bell housing

    I searched...

I have this leak at the bell housing. It looks like tranny oil but I am not sure; its dark oil. I have not lifted the car to check but I did replace the rear crank seal when I replaced the oil pan gasket. any idea?

Most tranny fluid is clearish. Its probably oil. Clean up the area as best as you can to pin it down. I'm guessing rear crank seal.

DAMN!!! I really dont want to take that damn tranny out again. What a B**** of a job it is. And I already did the rear main seal - why would it be leaking?

          Transmission input shaft seal.

Not all tranny fluid is clear...could be red if using ATF.

How can I test which oil it is? Honestly... when I let the car idle in place, I find both clear oil and sometimes and dirty oil. (?????)

Easiest way is prolly to smell it. It may sound stupid but they have distinct odors to them.

Answer: Improper installment. That is usually the case when putting a new seal in. I always take my time when installing. It's imperative to make sure the rubber ring is even and laying flat around the entire rim.

I was thinking improper installment; but either this just started happening after no leaks for about 40-50 miles or so, or I just started noticing it. However, I have been driving it close distances and have noticed that it is leaking less and less. Now it is to the point where it drops maybe 10-15 drops in a couple hours when earlier in the day is was a drop every 5 seconds or so. ?????
