Hey guys,
This my first post on this forum. I post sometimes at e30tech (the owner was in my old fraternity), but they are mostly turbo guys.
The story: I bought an e30 (1991 318is) for the purpose of doing an engine swap. I haven't ever really worked on cars before, but im pretty decent with mechanical things and i have an engineering degree, so i figured that if i took my time and read enough, i could figure it out.
So I also bought the m50 and the transmission (for $1200 for both). I then proceeded to take the engine apart to do a rebuild. The day i got the engine down to just the block, i got kicked out my garage (by my school, it was the yacht club's space, but i was in the yacht club, so wtf....anyways) I had to move the dissasembled engine and try to put it back together in the basment of my frat house, which sucked because it kept gettin beer almost spilled on it etc.
Now I actually have room to work on it, but i have forgotten where everything goes. I labeled stuff and put it in bags, but that only helps so much. I have been checking against realoem.com/bmw but its still pretty slow going. (oh yeah..its a vanos too...which is totally dissassembled)
so basically, i am gonna just post my progress here, if you happen have any pointers, or you notice that i did something stupid, please let me know.
also, i put 10k miles on my e30 this winter, and now it rusted to the ground..so i am gonna part it out. I am gonna buy a non rusty one for the swap.
Here are some pics:

My garage

Bags of various parts, all labeled ingeniously things like "springy part from front of engine"

I will probably pull all my hair out dealing with this

My Garage again.

The block and my car, "Rusty". It gonna get parted out, so if you need a hood or bumpers or something like that, lemme know.

the head...remachined.
now my first question, that seemed simple enough, but no one has yet answered on any site...
Does the arrow on the piston point to the front or the back of the car? (see pic below)
