    motor oil weight

I have a stock S50 swap and really only drive the car in the summer. I was using mobil 1 0w40 but when I autocross and it's 90+ degrees the lifters tick after 2 to 3 runs. It has never done this while daily driving, or during autox in cooler temps. Figured I should go to a heavier weight since it's about time for an oil change.

What weight are people using that regularly autox their cars?

I run 10-40 in the winter and 20-50 in the summer.

You're pretty much always going to get lifter tick after hard driving with these motors. Nothing to worry about.

I've heard that some of the heavier weight oils can cause issues with vanos. No idea on the validity of that. I'm running 10W40 year round - I don't drive the car much in winter and it stays decently warm here.

I use Castrol GTX. I hope we can still be friends.

There's an entire thread dedicated to oil weight on bf.c, everyone runs something different. I've tried several different weights with no significant change, and currently am using 10w40 iirc.

The Castrol 5w50 worked fine for me. Overfill by a quart to reduce ticking.

I'm running the Castrol 0w30 right now. Haven't taken it cone packing yet, but the car seems happier with the lighter oil. (It's LL01 certified.)

                          I'm rocking Rotella T6 5w40.

Works great and its like 29.99 for the 5qts at walmart.

Ambient temperature really isn't an issue. When you track your car, temps can easily rise to over 250°. You should run an oil that can take those temps or think about getting a cooler.
                              I run 10w60.

I recommend looking at the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viscosity_index
                              For example:
                              Castrol Edge Forumula RS 10W60 - 174
                              Valvoline VR1 10W60 - 168
                              Cheapo oil - 119
