    E30M50 temp gauge not working

Has anybody had any problems with the temp gauge on their E30M50 not working? I followed the AKG covnersion guide for the electrics and tried both wires that they claim to be temperature wires but with no luck. The gauge is fine, I tested it on straight ground.

Does the signal come from a sender on the block or is it the one on the radiator/resovior? Does it work with hte E30 cluster? Likely to shit itself after just 79,000Ks?

    Thanks folks.

Did you change out the one temp sensor in the M50 to the M20 one? A sensor in the head needs to be changed.

Its the rear sensor- There are two different m20 sensors. Look at your old one to see if it has two pins, or one pin. I'd recommend replacing it with a new one, seeing as you pretty much have to take the intake manifold off to get to it.

              Hey Jordan,

Do you know of any place that has a better diagram? Or can you post one for us from your shop or something?

assuming you're using an e36 harness this is what it should look like:

                  e36/e30
                  8/12 - Grey / Grey* - Check Engine Light
10/10 - Blue Yellow / Blue - Dynamic Oil Level Sensor
12/4 - Brown Violet / Brown Violet - Coolant Temp Sensor
13/13 - Green Violet / Green Violet - Fuel Pump Relay
14/14 - Black White / Black White - Speedometer signal
                  15/15 - Black Green / Black Green - Starter
16/2 - White Yellow / Green Yellow - Static Oil Level Sensor
                  18/17 - Black Yellow / Black Yellow - Starter
19/16 - White Green / White Black - Diagnostic Connector
                  20/9 - Black / Black - Engine Speed (tach)
                  21/7 - Green / Green - Ignition Switch
                  22/6 - Green White / Green White - O2 Sensor, Heater Relay
23/5 - Brown Green / Brown Green- Oil Pressure Sensor
24/8 - White Black / White Green - Idle Speed Control / Fuel Rate
                  25/1 - Blue / Blue - Alternator Charge

                  * Engine Plug Diagram says its green on the m20 side, on my connector, it is grey.

This is how I am wired up, I hope it helps.

I havnt changed any sensors in the block. The engine is from a 93 525i and its in my E30 which is an 89 318i that had the M40B18 motor.

Thanks for your help guys. I'll look into replacing this rear temperature sensor with an M20 item.

In all reality ( i realized this after removing the intake man.) you can actually get to the temp sensor as is.. Or at least on a 93 M50 you could.. Its the rearmost one, but still its just under the second cylinder "tunnel" so just in the front of the manifold.. a bit of a B*tch, but easier than taking everything else off..

or you can go through the whole motor when the engines out of the car before you drop it in the e30. :)
                        NEED SOME VINYL STICKERS???

true :) thats for those of us who dont realize the difference in sensors and leave the e36 one in there.. thats the only thing that i had to change on the motor itself aside from the pan.. but yea, ur right

Ha ha, Try starting with a motor with nothing on it but the Vanose, the oil thingy alt. and the pullys every thing else has been taken off for an OBD1 swap for an S52. Friend bought every thing but the body from a 99 M3 for his 94 325 and made it into a 332i.
Well i thought it would be a good idea to buy this thing from him.
Ha ha, its been a nightmare thinking i just needed the mani and a pan and harness/DME. Ha ha boy was i wrong.
And now on top of that My engine caught on fire wich has pushed me into a rushed state of geting this done and i have got almost every thing i need but not quite.

wow..... I feel lucky.. The good thing is that the motor that im using i practically know it from the inside out (did a valve job on it a while back)
So i wasnt expecting any surprises.. I picked up the DME/harness,motor from a running car, took it out myself.. but ive heard of a few people catching fire...
