Using the steel shift linkage frame/support...

I've been running my swapped set up for a while now, it's my DD. I used the Getrag 260, but mine had the apparently older style set up for the shifter. I've made it work for a while, at the cost of scraping the console every time I shift into 5th gear. So the other day I tried "fixing it".
I bent my linkage again to try and get it just right. While its still not perfect, I think I'll get it there with a little more adjustment. My real question is about the support or frame for the gear selector and the linkage. I understand most people use the aluminum piece from the later models. However I feel like the steel piece would work better if i could get it right, cuerrently it just dosn't sit right and interferes with everything.
I was wondering if anyone has scuessfuly used the steel piece , and if so how they did it? How they bent it or cut it ect..... and a picture would be the best!
    Any help is apreciated, TIA!!

I have an extra steel support if you need one.. but I used a ZF320 when I did my swap.
