    Camshaft Clearance

I am installing my S50 cams into my m50 and I NEED to know the clearance so I can plastigage them to BMW spec.
I cannot find anything on google or any PDF formats. I searched, read head rebuilds NO ONE lists this info or seems to do it.
Please make me look like a fool and link me or tell me them =)

Ey dude, there's no bearing on the cams....they're bearing caps. I believe they're torqued to 17#

Yeah, that is what I ment I guess. I just want to know if the caps are worn and need to be replaced.

I just don't like the idea of used cams into used trays. Reason for plastigage*

Do you know 100% on them being 17#? I am installing today and I don't want to over tighten or leve them too loose.

Edit: title changed to help in future search.

The torque numbers are on the very 1st page of a google search, fyi.

Never heard of anyone plastiguaging the cams. Main bearings yes, cams no.

I guess it is done when used cams are taken to replace other used cams. Just like the project I am doing. And I was searching for clearance not the trq #s. I already have that PDF on my computer. But thank you =) I guess I will just trq them down to spec and see what happens.

The S/M 50/2 engine valve clearance is adjusted hydraulically. Oil pressure fills the lifter cups to keep the lash good.
On an S54, you would need to use shims to keep the clearance to spec. Go-No go feeler gauges are used to measure the clearance on mechanical lifter engines.
You could measure the cam lobes to ensure that the cams are correct and are not worn.

good info, but I believe F34 to be asking how to check the journals for acceptable clearance. As far as I know there isnt a go/no-go spec for this clearance. Best thing I could reccomend is to check the journal clearance with plastigauge, and compare the clearance to other published specs. I cant imagine that BMW is using something too far outside of acceptable norms for oil film thickness and clearances on their engines. Someone out there should have this information for any engine actually.

You have reading comprehension! You are 100% on what I am looking for. Good news is there is next to NO wear on the cams and cam journals. But the head a completely full of carbon build up. So I tore it all down and spent over 900 including the cams to rebuild it. Had the head steam cleaned/chem dipped. Had the valves done etc, figured I might as well since I am going FI now ;)

Did I buy the cams off of you? I think so xD

And I am doing you proud if so, rebuilding the WHOLE top end ;)
