I decided to do the 24v swap. My build tread.

sup, so im making the switch, heres where im at so far.. this is gona be a very slow build, but I will update as I go along. This week I picked up the motor and got it on the engine stand, This week coming I'll be doing the OBD1 conversion, and 525i oil pan. I'm not going for anything to fancy/ enging bay or bolt on goodies just want a good running s52 e30;) so this swap is gonna be as basic as posible. Need to figure out Temp sensor location and Vanos connector wit the OBD1 harness.. My first swap, and I have tons of noob questions:D! Any help will be appreciated! Heres some pictures of the drity motor, but it only has 66K on it.

    8/26/11 pick up day.

8/27/11 put engine on the stand.

    Motor going into this.

Update and questions coming very soon!

Ok, for the s52 u already have a temp sensor in the head, youll need two. you need two; one for ecu, one for cluster. next to the exsisting temp sensor, there is a coolant port. this port leads to your throttle body.

this port is in place to keep the throttle body nice and hot... why would you do such a thing to your ambient temperature. heating it is important if you are in the antartic so no precipitation turns into ice keeping your throttle at wide open.

REMOVE THAT PORT! your not going to the antartic.

now you have this hole... plug it with an e30 cluster temp sesnor, after you take a die too it and rethread it..

Vanos connector remains the same in the harness. 413 red label? just let trm know is obd1 s52.

Yea its a 413 Red, they sent out the software last week. I ordered that plug and play Temp sensor harness from TRM as well.. so it plugs into the s52 original temp sensor and sends the signal to the to connectors on the OBD1 harness. IMO its worth it if it works:). I'm just trying to figure out the crank case venting system.. it seems the most guys try to use the stock s52 oil separator and stuff. I thought I can just run everything off the obd1

if you search around, the people who used it all reported that the adapter will not work.

my venting system is the same as my m50 :/. don't really see why your having issues there

He's on the money. remove the nipple, rethread the temp sensor(one prong, brown top, e30 one)

Zionsville has an adapter that lets you keep the routing of the coolant lines to the TB. If you are in a warmer climate then I don't think its necessary. You can run everything off the OBD1 stuff. I have an s52 obd1 and don't have any of the oil seperator bits. Now if your engine is experiencing a lot of blow by then you may want to add an oil / air seperator to keep oil out of the intake.

^^ He's right that plug from trm is only for obd2 to convert to obd1 for the e36, the S52 and M52 uses a sensor that has both temp for the dme and temp for the gauge in one. The temp gauge for the cluster(e36) has different ohms than the temp sensor for (e30) gauge.

I was looking at my friends s50 e30 today and I have an idea of how everything will be setup. s52 shouldnt be much different, aleast i dont think so.. Im trying to search online to find good detail photos of a s52 obd1 swap in a e30. I do better with pictures, than reading and visualizing:) again thanks for all your insite!
