Help! my arms are weak. (Power Steering)

    Alright guys,

I've searched a bunch and just need confirmation so I can troubleshoot elsewhere. My car has zero power steering at the moment.

Are my power steering lines hooked up correctly here:

    Or here:

In both pictures the line going from the pump to the rack is is hooked up to the smaller banjo bolt, which is on the top in my 95 M3 rack. The skinny line going back to the res is on the bottom larger banjo bolt.

Im guessing the first picture is correct? the banjo bolts seem to fit better in the lines than in picture two.

Im just not sure because real oem has me confused:

The picture shows the larger banjo bolt on the top. The large banjo bolt on my pump and my brothers pump is on the side.

I'm guessing my pump was fine, but since I ran it like picture two for too long I ruined the pump - there was no difference in power assistance when I changed the line around.

Lastly does the pump to rack line have to flow a certain direction? How can you tell if you have the orientation right? I have mine the way it is because it was the first way I could get it to fit around the engine mounting arm.

    Thanks,

I didn't have power steering with my m20 setup. Wasn't too bad, but I want power steering now that I have the M50.

I have no idea. Thats why im trying to confirm the PS line routing. If they are all correct, I could say that the pump is bad correct?

Put some more air in your front tires, that fixes your power-steering as far as I can tell :P

lol I'm tired of leather being fused to my hands from not having power steering.

Top banjo bolt is from the reservoir, the bottom bolt goes to the rack.

Is it smooth but hard to turn, or is it lumpy/binding in places? Are there any leaks? Is there lots of fluid? Does it whine or squeal when you turn?

Im in the same boat. I think I have a kink in the line from the rack to the res but not sure.

Is it smooth but hard to turn, or is it lumpy/binding in places? Its smooth but a royal pita to turn when the car isnt moving. At speed, perfect.

Are there any leaks? No leaks other than one of the connections where the rubber meets the metal connect on the hose.

Is there lots of fluid? Plenty

Does it whine or squeal when you turn?No noise at all

I have a pump on hand to try a different pump but was going to try to free up the kink which doesnt pinch the line closed but just enough...im guessing. All I really want to make sure is that my 98 M3 rack is not bad! :hitler:

When the top banjo bolt (the smaller one) is in the res feed line it has like 3mm of play, the crush washer barely seals it and it actually sits lop sided in the line. Also the crush washer actually starts to be pushed inside the fitting. That can't be right.

Do I have an e34 pump or were the e34 and e36 pumps the same? I have no idea if the pump is making noises, I have open headers right now lol. The steering is stiff - I have brand-new everything: rack, lines, tie rods.

Edit: sorry for the second post (it's a pain in the dick to edit a long post on my phone)

When I had the large res line to the top smaller banjo bolt it would shoot ATF out the hole in the res cap a good foot or so when I turned the wheel full lock. It doesn't do this anymore tho.

I briefly verified this plumbing with my buddies swap but am still unsure.

I think yours (animal) is different from mine. The bottom of my pump is the larger coming from the larger from res.

My bottom banjo bolt is the larger one too - which is opposite form what real oem says.

this. Also, can someone confirm pump differences used on m/s5x motors?

I don't think you're supposed to use a different pump in a swap...I used the E30 pump, and bent new lines.
