Hoping to gain insight on oil delivery as it relates to lifter tick etc.

Normally I've been posting engine questions on bimmerforums, but this is particularly swap-specific so I feel that I should bring it up here.

I'm currently delving into the process of getting my S50's top end rebuilt. This was driven by nasty lifter tick at operating temp which was helped with a better oil but definitely is not healthy and still evident. Compression test over the weekend revealed that indeed the HG is leaking between a couple cylinders (makes me excited to feel a healthy S50, bc I gotta say I never would have guessed I had bad compression in multiple cylinders) so I do in fact need to go this route at the very least to change the HG.

Reading the archives of 1000s of posts about ticking and adding extra oil as a bandaid, I have to concur that with the crankcase overfilled, the ticking is reduced. question - WHY!? This leads me to believe that I either have a leaky pickup tube, pickup gasket, or somehow faulty oil pump. With the prospect of 24 lifters @ $18/each, I can't help but question whether oil delivery is the real problem here. I'm getting a tick 100% of the time at operating temperature - if I'm getting inadequate oil at the same time, this is potentially a larger problem than the lifters and valvetrain being noisy.

Has anyone had pretty severe ticking, addressed their lubrication system whether it be a new pump, tube, or baffling the pan, and had the tick go away? I'm sure that I'll end up with new lifters as long as I'm going inside the head, but I'm still curious if I'll be overfilling the crank at that point. E34 oil pain oil level adequate for E36 M3? I feel that this is a big problem that often gets swept under the rug of overfilling. I doubt that the majority of these engines are knowingly overfilled to reduce valvetrain noise, with the sheer volume that are out there and most being owned by "average" joe 90s BMW driver.

I've also wondered this a good bit. Pressure must be ok as the light never comes on and oil filter housing is covered in oil. I do get valve tick that used to go away when temps got up or it was reved to a certain level for some time as the BMW article mentioned. But now it seems to tick no matter what. Have looked into replacing the lifters as well but I just went ahead and bought another s52 to build from scratch. Figure its pointless to keep throwing money at this one when I could use the money for a full rebuild. We'll see. Might just sell the s52 block I puchased and fix the one I have. Kinda been at a stand still lately. :(

These motors like thick oil for one. 2: they have oil frothing issues that results in inconsistant oil pressure when autoxing/track, thats why overfilling shuts them up. 3: the lifters do die after a while, revving the motor ups the pressure and gets the dying ones to shutup a little but if theyre dead, theyre dead. Sometimes a little ATF in the oil for a little will get any buildup in them to break loose and break them free as well.
