    Pulling M50 tomorrow...questions

So I found an untouched M50 at the local junkyard that I am gonna pull tomorrow morning and then check the rod bearing just to make sure everything is cool there and to double check compression.

Anyways I wanted to ask you guys if there is any special tools I am going to need to get it out that I might not know about from glancing. Also anything I should look out for when pulling it? Mainly I want to know exactly what I need to get off that car tomorrow while I am picking it.

    List from : http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=45442

    HAVE
    3. E30 M20 fan, poss. w/clutch (have)
    10. E30 M3 driveshaft or i used the front of the e36 mated to the rear of my e30 M3 have it rebalanced (have 87 325E which fits)
    11. E30 diff. w/ 3:25 ratio or E28 533i w/ 3:25 LSD (have 4:10 LSD, might have to get a different one)

    GETTING TOMORROW
    5. E34 throttle cable (will get tomorrow)
    14. E34 oil pickup ect. ect.(get tomorrow)
    13. E34 oil pan (get tomorrow)
    17. E36 M3 Motronic (car has red label 413 DME which I will take)
    18. OBDI intake manifold (will get tomorrow)
    19. OBDI throttle body boot (will get tomorrow)
    21. OBDI wiring harness DO NOT BUY silver label ?413? motronic, it has EWS (security), it can only put into original chassis (red label 413)

    NEED TO FIND
    4. E28 533i motor mounts w/ 5mm spacers or e28 m5 mounts with out spacers (need)
    12. E30 318 ECU mount (need to get)
    15. E36 m3 exhaust manifold (need to get)
    20. E36 alloy mounting arms (need to get)

    GET LATER
    1. E30 88' radiator, I used the e36 unit with the lower mounts raised (getting e36 m42)
    6. E21 brake booster w/ modified shaft, to 15mm or 325IX/e32 735 without mod to the shaft (get later)
    7. E34 M5 or 25mm brake master cylinder w/ additional brake line used for the 325ix booster or a e32 735i with the modified 320i booster (get later)
    8. E30 325 trans X-member (white325is trans brace?)
    9. E28 m5 or two 320i trans mounts/ which are cheaper (get later)
    16. M50 radiator hoses (will buy new)

    DO I NEED THIS?
    22. the engine harness and the ECU are all E36 M3. (do I need the engine harness off the M50?)
On the standard E30 with M20 engine fitted, you have the large round plug (C101) up on the firewall next to the brake booster.
This plug has 2 parts. One half is connected to the car wiring, and the other is connected to the engine harness.
When the M20 was removed, the engine side of the plug was removed with the engine. Now I have the S50 half of the plug in its place. Although similar in appearance, it will not plug directly into the E30 half of the plug.
I removed the E36 engine half of the plug, and replaced it with an E30 one. This then allows the 2 parts to screw back together. All you need to make sure is that you have the correct wires connected to each other. Its not just pin 1 to pin 1 and pin 2 to pin 2 etc (although some of the wires do actually connect this way).
This plug connection is the only point where the E30 & E36 wiring interface with each other. The rest of the E36 M3 engine harness is totally self contained.
    23. the exhaust from the downpipe to the muffler is all custom made (so no exhaust manifold)

Based on what was available to the E34 it’s a M50B25TU. So it has VANOS, which I was skeptical about but I think I can get over it as long as it doesn’t go out.

Also looks like a mechanic wrote down the compression readings on the valve cover. Lowest is 235, highest is 245.

    1 - 235
    2 - 235
    3 - 245
    4 - 235
    5 - 235
    6 - 240

Here are some pics of the engine, please let me know if you don’t think its worth pulling and/or have input that will save me some time tomorrow.

I dont see anything there that would scare me. Beware of the reverse Torx bolts holding the engine and trans together. you will need the proper tools to remove these.

So the e30 m20 mechanical fan is the correct fan for the m50 swap? I've been trying to figure that bit out, I'm also headed to the yard tomorrow myself.

Cool thanks guys. I will know more when I get the oil pan off in the morning. Just double check the crank. Hopefully the compression check out. I got the torx covered from needing them for the m20.

          Anything else? What about electrical?

IMO that motor looks pretty well cared for and the comp results if true are great. What's the price?

Any idea why it's in the junkyard? And better yet wonder how long ago were those numbers from? I like to see engines running before purchasing.

                  $290 with warranty.

And I am going to get the motor out and take the oil pan off to check the rod bearings and crank. Also gonna do another compression test. Worst case they give me a credit if the motor is bad and I can come get a motor some other time.

Oh hell that's worth it even for the oil pan pick up and dipstick! You better grab that the head looks good enough to use for sure. That's a $500 part!

I pulled the whole motor. My girlfriend was my helper....love her. Didn't complain once. We had to leave to get her back to town for work so I was a little rushed at the end which wasn't fun. Once I get the engine on the engine stand going to really go over it and make sure everything looks tip-top.

Thanks. I am probably going to run into some bumps along the way, but I am going to do the wiring myself to make sure its done right. I hear you are the expert in these parts.

Yea its the yard in Santa Paula. Their prices are really high for anything and they nit-pick you on everything little thing even relays and loose wire.

That engine with everything was $450 out the door. They charged me for the alternator, DME, wiring harness with relays (different price from just wiring harness), and she almost charged me for the coils because I had taken them off. And the kicker....since I took off the intake manifold to unhook all the clips for the wiring harness, she "couldn't" sell me a warranty so once I pay the motor is mine.

                          I love this place.

Wow man, that's a shitty junk yard. But still a damn good price on the engine. Good Luck!!

And Dave is the man on wiring harnesses, he did a great job with mine
