The Official OBD1 vs OBD2 argument thread.

This thread is very interesting... I do have 1 question though...

You see everyone scrambling to convert from OBD2 to OBD1... What about the other way around? Converting an OBD1 engine (M50B25TU for example) to OBD2?

I understand that there would need to be several items flashed out (EWS, SAP etc) but it shouldn't be too difficult, right?

Many are actually for more brainpower- smarter brain is better when tuning a turbocharged engine.

The obd2 usa engine has a hall position crank position sensor in the rear of block; European spec model obd2 cars have the updated hall position sensor mounted in the front like a obd1 crank position sensor- they are different style sensors so not compatible but easy to order online or at bmw.

With this crank sensor any obd1 engine can natively be ran on obd2 electronics.

I know of a few cars that have upgraded obd1 turbocharged electronics to obd2 for smarter tuning and troubleshooting. The processsor is also more powerful and the same engine will run cleaner and more reliably on the newer electronics

The speedo speed? Cluster being old/broken.

Speedometer yes. Fixed that haha

It is old. 21 years old to be exact. But the speedometer is fully functional so I don't really think it's broken

dAnother question. Any idea why my speedometer might be off?
I'm on stock basket weaves and stock tires right now.
It seems to be off quite a bit when I use my GPS speedometer

put a BMW 17 coding plug in and everything seems great.

No wonder the sloot wasn't pulling ...

Hey guys haven't been able to really test my car much but it seems like the RPM gauge is off.

I have a 3.25 diff and the Tach indicated 5k RPM @ 65mph, this is obviously way off right?

It seems like its right when I'm sitting still and I rev it, but it just doesn't seem right while moving. It definitely doesn't pull like it should when its indicating 4k rpm.

Once I drive it more I'll be able to explain it better and maybe get a video.

it's a nice RPM calc with all the gearing suitable/available for the e30's, check if yours is accurate or not (it will only work with IE, otherwise the table will get skewed)

Don't have access to IE at the moment, but I tried another one I found and my tach is obviously way off.

I'd be at 100 MPH plus in 5th at 5k rpm

Can anyone make a harness adapter for this?

What is being sent by CANbus?

I was curious about this too. I haven't seen any tuners in the US that claim to do it. But this guy in the UK says he can do both the ECU and harness so it will be "plug and play". Thread says S54 and S62 but if you read it all he says he can do M54 and some other newer engines too.

Just flash out a heaps of options from the ecu?
Am I able to buy a harness adapter for this?

I already have a 330i wreck so already have everything I need... and I have no issues with mounting and running the drive-by-wire throttle.

Can anyone make a harness adapter for this?
