Started and ran but now nothing.

89 325i w/ s52 OBD1... so i finished hooking up all the vacuum hoses last night. this is what i have...

on the intake manifold; w/ the turner motorsports m50 conversion kit fyi.

    1) ICV plugged into intake manifold and a hose to throttle body
2.) One small vacuum hose to FPR that is at the back of the fuel rail
3.) other two vacuum connections (one big, one small) on intake manifold are plugged.
4.) the OBD2 valve cover with original hose to PCV (circle thing with cone shape bottom) other end of PCV not hooked up.

when i finished putting things back together last night it started right away and idled fine for about a minute and then the CEL came on so i turned it off.

Today i hooked up the bottom connection to the dipstick (using original obd2 with hose connection)
after hooking that up the car started but wouldnt idle and the rpm's shoot up when pressing accelerator and hesitate to come back down.

It also smells a lot like gas when trying to start it. It seems like its flooding a bunch.

please help. I was really looking forward to driving it today, but ran into this problem. Its always something..

oh, and i am using an OBD2 Dinan TB. it came with the donor car i bought. i have an obd1 TB i can swap over if that is the problem.

I don't think a vacuum leak would cause a no start.

i went out today, drained the gas tank since it was a little old and put in new 92 octane fuel. car started up no problem but was still running really rough for about a minute, but then settled down and idled fine for a bit. i took it out on the street and attempted driving it for the first time. It would go in first for a 100ft or so but then any attempt on accelerating would cause the rpms to just die and act like it wasnt getting ANY gas.

this happened a few times so i stopped and let it run for about a minute. The idle was surging/pulsating from about 1000 down to 500 then back up again.

I have s52 headers on it right now that arent hooked up to anything so its just the headers, with only one O2 sensor. So its only reading the o2 from 2 cylinders. Could this be the problem?

Also, on the underside of the intake manifold there is a little plastic insert that looks like it needs a hose. What is this?

Hey Aaron. It sounds like it's a vac leak.

I would say that its a vac leak or the AFM was hooked up wrong

It could be the temp sensor

Soo.... i realized I had a bad ICV and went to the JY today and got one. Hooked everything back up and made sure that there were ZERO vacuum leaks, and used the OBD1 PCV valve, fixed my throttle cable and it fired right up and idled perfectly. Tried driving it but it wouldnt go into gear that easily so i blead the clutch again and it drove vine in reverse and in first.

Only problem now is, that it wont shift into second when accelerating. It will shift fine into first and second, but when i try and shift to second it acts as if the clutch is not engaging.

Should I bleed the clutch again, or....?

FYI, i have a South Bend stage 3 clutch, and bolts were tightened to proper lbs with torque wrench.

EDIT: it is shifting, i figured that out today. The selector rod is too long so it starts grinding a little bit when i go back to far. Since it has a UUC short shifter i wasn't used to having that short of a throw.

I am going to switch to the e30 shifter selector, and cut off the balancer type thing that is on the OEM e30 driveshaft. Its big and getting in the way. The selector rod rubs against it sometime.

Has anyone has this same problem?
